SMU at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — The Duke women’s basketball team, riding a seven-game winning streak, will look to continue its dominant ACC play when it hosts struggling SMU on Sunday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Blue Devils (17-6) are firmly in the conference title hunt and coming off a gritty 59-58 road victory at Louisville on Thursday. Duke has won its last three games by an average of 23.7 points, showcasing a potent blend of offense and defense. A key catalyst has been sophomore forward Toby Fournier, who is averaging 18.1 points and 5.4 rebounds over the last seven contests. She scored 15 points and blocked three shots in the win over Louisville.

Conversely, the Mustangs (8-15) have lost seven of their last eight games, including a 65-70 home defeat to Wake Forest on Thursday. SMU has struggled offensively during its slide, failing to reach 70 points in six of those eight losses. Guard Ayanna Thompson, who scored a team-high 17 points against Wake Forest, will be a focal point for the Mustangs’ offense. She has been inconsistent, however, scoring in single digits in four of the last seven games.

The matchup presents a stark contrast in trajectories. Duke’s defense, which has held opponents to 58 points or fewer in four of the last five games, will test an SMU squad averaging just 60.6 points during its 1-7 skid. The Blue Devils have also been formidable at home, winning their last four in Durham by an average margin of 41.5 points.

For SMU, containing Fournier inside and finding consistent scoring beyond Thompson will be paramount. The Mustangs have not beaten a ranked opponent this season and face a steep challenge in one of college basketball’s most hostile road environments.

This game is part of the ACC’s scheduling partnership. Following this contest, Duke will prepare for a pivotal home showdown with North Carolina on Feb. 15, while SMU continues its tough conference slate at North Carolina on Feb. 12.

Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. EST on Sunday, Feb. 8.
