West Georgia Holds Off North Florida Rally in ASUN Women’s Basketball

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by runs and resilience, the West Georgia Wolves weathered a furious second-half comeback by the North Florida Ospreys to secure a 75-68 victory in an ASUN Conference women’s basketball matchup Saturday at UNF Arena.

The Wolves, who led by as many as 13 points in the first half, saw their advantage evaporate completely in the third quarter before a dominant fourth-quarter performance sealed the road win. The victory improved West Georgia to 15-8 overall, while North Florida fell to 8-15.

The contest unfolded in distinct phases. West Georgia established control early, leveraging a disruptive defense that forced 10 first-half turnovers by the Ospreys. The Wolves closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 19-10 and extended that lead to 38-25 at halftime, thanks in part to 12 points from Asia Donald.

The most critical juncture of the game arrived in the third quarter. North Florida, led by the dynamic scoring of Alonya Waldon, completely reversed the momentum. The Ospreys outscored West Georgia 21-11 in the period, erasing the double-digit deficit. Waldon scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the quarter, including a 3-pointer that gave North Florida its first lead since the opening minutes at 35-34. The Ospreys took a 46-49 lead into the final period, having held the Wolves to just 4-of-13 shooting in the quarter.

Facing a deficit on the road, West Georgia responded with its best basketball of the night. The Wolves opened the fourth quarter on a decisive 14-2 run, reclaiming a lead they would not relinquish. The surge was fueled by defensive stops and efficient offense. Sydne Tolbert and Grace O’Gara hit crucial 3-pointers, and Donald added a triple of her own during the run that put West Georgia ahead 60-51 with 6:47 remaining.

North Florida fought back behind Dezuray McGill, who scored 10 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter, to close within 65-61 with 1:54 left. However, West Georgia’s composure at the free-throw line proved decisive. The Wolves, who shot 22 for 26 from the line for the game, made 10 of 12 free throws in the final 1:08 to ice the victory. Donald and Tolbert were perfect on multiple trips to the stripe in the closing moments.

Destiny Jones, named the top star for West Georgia, provided a pivotal all-around performance off the bench. The Louisville, Kentucky, native recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in just 26 minutes, adding three steals. Her activity on both ends helped stabilize the Wolves during key stretches.

Tolbert, a guard from Louisville, Kentucky, led West Georgia with 18 points, adding four assists and three rebounds in a team-high 38 minutes. Donald, from Hobart, Indiana, finished with 17 points. O’Gara of Worcester, Massachusetts, contributed 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.

For North Florida, Waldon, a guard from Melbourne, Florida, was the offensive catalyst with 19 points, three assists, a steal and a block. McGill, from Miami, Florida, was a force inside with 18 points and six rebounds. Alexa Washington of Monroeville, Pennsylvania, directed the offense with eight assists but also committed seven of North Florida’s 21 turnovers. Elle Blatchford of Canton, Georgia, added 13 points, three rebounds and two blocks.

Statistically, the game was a tale of efficiency. While North Florida shot slightly better from the field (43.6% to 39.7% for West Georgia) and won the points-in-the-paint battle 38-32, the Wolves’ advantages at the 3-point line and free-throw line were telling. West Georgia made two more 3-pointers (7-5) and outscored the Ospreys by seven at the charity stripe. The Wolves also converted 21 North Florida turnovers into 22 points.

The win completed a regular-season sweep for West Georgia, which defeated North Florida 76-61 on Jan. 8. According to Interstat’s ELO system, West Georgia entered the game with a 74.6% probability to win.

West Georgia returns to action Wednesday at home against North Alabama. North Florida will host Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday.
