Green Bay at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (Interstat) — A pivotal Horizon League women’s basketball clash is set for Saturday when the Youngstown State Penguins host the Green Bay Phoenix at Beeghly Center.

Both teams enter on winning streaks, setting the stage for a high-stakes conference battle. Green Bay (19-5, 11-2 Horizon) has won eight consecutive games, most recently a 61-58 road victory at Robert Morris on Thursday. Youngstown State (17-7, 9-4) has won three straight, including a dominant 79-48 home win over Milwaukee that same night.

The matchup features a compelling contrast in backcourt stars. Green Bay’s Maddy Skorupski has been a consistent force, averaging 14.3 points and 4.9 assists during the Phoenix’s winning streak. She scored 13 points with six rebounds and four assists in the win over Robert Morris. For the Penguins, guard Erica King is coming off a 17-point, five-assist performance against Milwaukee, providing key perimeter scoring.

The teams met earlier this season on Dec. 7 in Green Bay, with the Phoenix securing a 56-47 victory. The rematch carries significant implications for the league standings, with Green Bay aiming to solidify its position at the top and Youngstown State looking to close the gap.

Green Bay’s defense, which has held opponents to an average of 57.9 points during its streak, will be tested by a Penguins’ offense that scored 72 points or more in three of its last four wins. Youngstown State must contend with the Phoenix’s balanced attack, which saw Ellie Buzzelle grab eight rebounds and Meghan Schultz add 12 points and two blocks in the last outing.

Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST Saturday. Green Bay visits Cleveland State next Wednesday, while Youngstown State hosts Robert Morris.
