Hornets Fall Just Short as Vikings Rally for Home Victory
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — In a game defined by grit over grace, the Portland State Vikings snapped a seven-game losing streak with a tense 64-62 victory over the Sacramento State Hornets in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball clash Saturday at the Stott Center.
The contest, played before a crowd of 602, was a stark contrast in styles. Portland State leveraged its efficiency inside, shooting 50% from the floor and dominating paint scoring 42-26. Sacramento State, meanwhile, relied on pressure defense and second-chance opportunities, forcing 17 turnovers and grabbing 12 offensive rebounds to fuel 18 points off those miscues. Despite shooting just 39.7% from the field, the Hornets stayed within striking distance until the final possession.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the closing seconds. Trailing 63-62 after Sacramento State’s Natalie Picton drilled a 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining, Portland State inbounded to its star, Hannah Chicken. She was fouled and made the first of two free throws with 13 seconds left to push the lead to 64-62 but missed the second. Sacramento State secured the rebound and called a full timeout with five seconds to play to set up a final play.
Out of the timeout, the Hornets went inside to forward Fatoumata Jaiteh, but her contested layup attempt in traffic as time expired missed the mark, sealing the narrow victory for the home team.
Chicken, a 6-foot sophomore from Taree, Australia, was the catalyst for Portland State, finishing with a game-high 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Her backcourt mate, Cici Ellington of Portland, added 17 points, including two crucial free throws with 31 seconds left that gave the Vikings a 63-59 lead. Laynee Torres-Kahapea orchestrated the offense with seven assists.
Sacramento State’s effort was led by a balanced attack. Picton, a guard from Welland, Canada, scored 17 points. Rubi Gray of Devonport, Australia, added 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Benthe Versteeg from Amsterdam contributed 14 points off the bench, and Jaiteh of Lynnwood, Washington, posted 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
The game was a defensive struggle from the outset, with both teams tied 9-9 after a first quarter featuring more turnovers than made baskets. Portland State built a slim 26-28 halftime lead, but the Hornets surged in the second half, using a 10-2 run to close the third quarter and trailing just 45-43 entering the final period.
The fourth quarter saw six lead changes. Portland State appeared to seize control with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Kyleigh Brown jumper, to lead 61-55 with just over two minutes to play. Brown, from Silverton, Oregon, finished with 17 points. Sacramento State answered with a 7-2 run, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
The win improved Portland State’s record to 6-17 overall. Sacramento State fell to 11-13. The Vikings avenged a 68-64 loss to the Hornets in Sacramento just four weeks prior.
According to advanced metrics, Sacramento State scored 62 points on 67 possessions for an offensive rating of 93.0, while Portland State managed 64 points on 72 possessions for a rating of 89.4, underscoring the game’s plodding, defensive nature. The Hornets’ pressure resulted in 11 steals, but their 14 turnovers and Portland State’s superior shooting percentage proved the difference.
