Central Arkansas at Queens (N.C.)
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Two ASUN women’s basketball teams looking to halt slides will meet Wednesday when the Central Arkansas Bears visit the Queens (N.C.) Royals at Levine Center.
Central Arkansas (11-10) has lost two straight, including a 70-64 home loss to Stetson on Saturday. The Bears are 4-4 in conference play. Queens (8-13) has dropped six of its last seven, most recently a 74-59 defeat to Eastern Kentucky last Friday. The Royals are 2-6 in the ASUN.
A key matchup will feature the teams’ top guards. Central Arkansas is led by Bree Stephens, who is coming off a 15-point, 4-rebound, 3-assist performance against Stetson. Over her last seven games, the guard is averaging 11.7 points and 3.1 assists.
She will be countered by Queens’ Dayuna Colvin, a workhorse who has logged 40 minutes in three of her last five contests. Colvin is averaging 12.4 points and 4.4 assists over that same seven-game span, highlighted by a near double-double of 10 points and 9 assists in a blowout win over Bellarmine on Jan. 29.
Central Arkansas has shown resilience on the road in conference play, securing wins at North Florida and Jacksonville earlier in January. Queens, however, has struggled at home in ASUN action, with its lone conference victory in Charlotte coming against Bellarmine.
The Bears have the edge in recent scoring, averaging 68.2 points over their last five games compared to the Royals’ 61.6. Defense may prove decisive; Queens allows an average of 72.1 points per game, while Central Arkansas yields 66.7.
This is the first of two scheduled meetings between the programs this season. They will meet again in Conway, Arkansas, on Feb. 27.
Following this contest, Central Arkansas will host Lipscomb on Saturday. Queens will remain at home to face North Alabama on Saturday.
