Oregon Holds Off Illinois Rally in Back-and-Forth Big Ten Clash

EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — In a nonconference women’s basketball clash defined by dramatic momentum swings, the Oregon Ducks survived a furious second-half rally by the Illinois Fighting Illini to escape with a 76-73 victory on Wednesday night at Matthew Knight Arena.

A crowd of 4,397 watched as the Ducks, leveraging a dominant first half, built a commanding 19-point lead only to see it evaporate completely in a disastrous third quarter before regrouping in the final minutes to secure the win. The victory improved Oregon’s record to 18-7, while Illinois fell to 16-7.

The game’s pivotal sequence, and the most important part of the contest, unfolded in the final 15 seconds. With the score tied at 72, Illinois’ Destiny Jackson committed a critical turnover, which was stolen by Oregon’s Ari Long with just five seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbounds play, Illinois’ Cearah Parchment fouled Oregon point guard Katie Fiso, sending her to the line with one second on the clock. The poised freshman calmly sank both free throws to put Oregon ahead by three. Illinois, out of timeouts, could not get a final shot off before the buzzer.

The finish was a stark contrast to the game’s opening act. Oregon raced out to a 23-14 lead after the first quarter, fueled by the inside-outside combination of Ehis Etute and Mia Jacobs. The Ducks extended their advantage to 45-24 by halftime, shooting a blistering 60% from the field in the first half while holding Illinois to just 10 second-quarter points. The Illini looked out of sorts, committing nine first-half turnovers and making only one of their 10 three-point attempts.

The entire complexion of the game flipped after the break. Illinois emerged from the locker room with renewed defensive intensity, holding Oregon to a stunning six points in the third quarter. The Ducks went scoreless for over seven minutes as the Illini mounted a 27-6 period. Berry Wallace and Destiny Jackson spearheaded the comeback, with Wallace scoring nine in the quarter and Jackson adding seven, including a driving layup that gave Illinois its first lead since the opening minutes at 51-50 with 37 seconds left in the third. A free throw by Jacobs sent the teams into the fourth quarter tied at 51.

The final period became a tense back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. Illinois held a 70-67 lead after a three-pointer from Wallace with just over a minute to play, but Oregon answered immediately. Jacobs connected on a crucial three-pointer off an assist from Fiso to tie the game with 1:28 remaining. After a Wallace layup put Illinois back up 72-70, Jacobs was fouled and made both free throws to knot the score again with 51 seconds left, setting the stage for the final, decisive sequence.

Oregon was led by Etute, who finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, and Jacobs, who added 23 points, three blocks, and two steals. Fiso orchestrated the offense with 16 points and nine assists. For Illinois, Wallace led all scorers with 19 points, while Jackson contributed 13 points and seven assists. Maddie Webber added 10 points for the Illini.

Statistically, the game was a study in halves. Oregon finished shooting 50.9% from the field, buoyed by its first-half performance, while Illinois shot 44.3%. The Illini won the battle on the glass with a 34-28 rebounding edge, including seven offensive boards, and forced 15 Oregon turnovers. Both teams finished with an identical offensive rating of 101.3, underscoring the game’s razor-thin margin.

The game was part of the Big Ten’s scheduling initiative. Illinois will return home to face Southern California on Sunday. Oregon remains at home to host Ohio State, also on Sunday.
