Georgetown at Creighton
Preview: Georgetown Hoyas at Creighton Bluejays
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Two Big East women’s basketball teams seeking consistency will meet Wednesday when the Georgetown Hoyas visit the Creighton Bluejays at CenturyLink Center.
Georgetown (12-10) arrives after a 59-67 home loss to Marquette on Sunday. Creighton (10-12) enters with momentum from a 72-66 road victory at Seton Hall the same day. The matchup is a quick rematch of a Dec. 28 game in Washington, D.C., which Georgetown won 76-74.
The Hoyas will lean on guard Khadee Hession, who is coming off a 20-point performance against Marquette. Her recent play has been volatile, however, scoring just two points against Seton Hall on Jan. 29 after her season-high output. Georgetown has lost two straight and three of its last five.
Creighton counters with forward Allison Heathcock, who recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Seton Hall. She has averaged 10.3 points over her last three games. The Bluejays have shown flashes, including an 82-64 rout of Xavier on Jan. 20, but have struggled against the conference’s top tier.
Both teams sit in the middle of the Big East standings, making this a pivotal game for postseason positioning. Georgetown’s offense, which was held to 52 points or fewer in two of its last three games, will be tested by a Creighton defense that allowed 66 or fewer in its two recent wins.
The Hoyas’ supporting cast includes Destiny Agubata, who had 11 points and five rebounds against Marquette. For Creighton, Kendall McGee (10 points, seven rebounds vs. Seton Hall) and Neleigh Gessert (16 points vs. Seton Hall) provide key secondary scoring.
Tipoff is set for Wednesday night in Omaha. Georgetown visits Villanova on Saturday, while Creighton hosts Marquette on Sunday.
