Marquette Pulls Away From Providence in Big East Women’s Basketball
MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — A dominant second-quarter surge propelled the Marquette women’s basketball team to a decisive 78-61 victory over Providence in a Big East Conference matchup Wednesday night at the Bradley Center.
The Golden Eagles, improving to 16-7 overall, used a 25-point second period to break open a tight game and never looked back, handing the Friars their third consecutive loss to fall to 10-14.
The game’s pivotal stretch began with Marquette clinging to a 19-18 lead after a competitive first quarter. Over the next 10 minutes, the Golden Eagles’ offense found its rhythm while their defense tightened, outscoring Providence 25-11. The run was fueled by efficient scoring from Lee Volker, who finished with 19 points, and timely contributions from the bench, including a critical three-pointer from Kennedi Perkins. Providence, meanwhile, managed just five field goals in the quarter, their offensive struggles epitomized by several missed layups and a stretch of empty possessions.
Marquette’s offensive execution was superior throughout, shooting 51.7 percent from the field compared to Providence’s 35.3 percent. The Golden Eagles also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 11 of 12 attempts. Providence’s offensive rating of 83.9 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of difficult shot-making against a stout Marquette defense.
The Friars were led by a standout performance from Teneisia Brown, who scored a game-high 24 points on 11-of-24 shooting. Sabou Gueye added 10 points for Providence. Despite forcing 14 Marquette turnovers, the Friars could not consistently convert those opportunities into enough points to close the gap, scoring 17 points off turnovers.
Marquette’s attack was more balanced and potent. Skylar Forbes, the team’s top star, led the way with 22 points, five assists and a block, continuing her strong recent form. Her back-to-back three-pointers in the final 90 seconds extinguished any faint hope of a Providence rally. Halle Vice provided a strong interior presence with 15 points and several key rebounds, while Jaidynn Mason orchestrated the offense with six assists.
The most important sequence of the game solidified Marquette’s control early in the third quarter. After Providence’ Teneisia Brown opened the second half with a basket to cut the deficit to 44-29, Marquette responded with a swift 6-0 run. It was capped by a Lee Volker three-pointer, assisted by Forbes, pushing the lead to 50-31 and effectively quashing any momentum the Friars hoped to build after halftime. Providence would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
The Golden Eagles dominated the paint, outscoring Providence 42-28, and out-rebounded the Friars 38-33. Providence’s Orlagh Gormley facilitated with four assists, but the team’s eight total assists highlighted their challenges in generating clean looks against Marquette’s defense.
An announced crowd of 1,774 watched as Marquette methodically built and maintained its advantage, aligning with statistical projections that heavily favored the Golden Eagles at home.
Providence will look to regroup when it hosts Xavier on Sunday. Marquette continues its conference schedule with a road test at Creighton, also on Sunday.
