Lady Lions Stun Boilermakers in Overtime Thriller

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering disparity in ball security, the Penn State Lady Lions overcame 20 turnovers and a relentless Purdue defense to secure an 85-82 overtime victory in a Big Ten women’s basketball clash Wednesday night at Mackey Arena.

The win, sealed by clutch free throws in the final seconds of the extra period, snapped a three-game losing streak for Penn State and improved its record to 8-15 overall. Purdue, which forced those 20 turnovers while committing only two, fell to 11-12 despite dominating the possession battle.

The most important part of the game was Penn State’s ability to survive its own carelessness and Purdue’s defensive pressure by shooting with remarkable efficiency. The Lady Lions connected on 51.9% of their field goals, including a scorching 9 of 16 from three-point range, and made 22 of 28 free throws. This offensive precision ultimately negated Purdue’s massive 21-0 advantage in points off turnovers.

Purdue’s defensive havoc, led by 14 team steals, kept the Boilermakers in the game despite frigid shooting. They shot just 29 of 78 from the floor and 5 of 26 from beyond the arc. Their 13 offensive rebounds gave them repeated second chances, but they struggled to convert, allowing Penn State to hang around and eventually force overtime tied at 74-74.

The extra period was a tense affair of answered baskets and critical fouls. Penn State never trailed in overtime, building a small lead that Purdue chipped away at. With the Lady Lions clinging to an 83-82 edge in the final seconds, Viktoria Ranisavljevic sank two free throws with 16 seconds left to push the lead to three. Purdue’s final attempt to tie, a three-point shot by Kiki Smith, missed, and a last-second offensive rebound and putback attempt by Tara Daye also failed as time expired.

Penn State was carried by a spectacular performance from guard Kiyomi McMiller, who scored 30 points and dished out nine assists in 42 minutes. Her ability to penetrate and create, both for herself and others, was the cornerstone of the Lady Lions’ offense. She was supported by center Gracie Merkle, who added 19 points and two blocks, and guard Moriah Murray, who contributed 15 points, including several key three-pointers.

For Purdue, Smith, a guard from Topeka, Kansas, led all scorers with 24 points. Daye was a force on both ends, finishing with 21 points, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Forward Kendall Puryear provided a significant boost off the bench with 13 points and relentless defensive activity.

The game began with Penn State establishing an early edge, leading 18-15 after the first quarter. Purdue responded with a 19-point second quarter to take a 34-36 lead into halftime. The third quarter was a defensive grind, with Purdue outscoring Penn State 18-14 to carry a 52-50 advantage into the final frame.

The fourth quarter saw both teams’ offenses awaken. Penn State erupted for 24 points, fueled by McMiller’s playmaking and timely outside shooting from Murray and Tea Cleante. Purdue matched the intensity with 22 points, primarily through Smith and Daye, setting the stage for the overtime drama.

The victory provides a rare bright spot in a difficult season for Penn State, while Purdue was left to rue missed opportunities and an inability to capitalize fully on its overwhelming turnover margin. A crowd of 3,712 watched the contest.

Penn State will look to build on the win when it hosts Michigan State on Saturday. Purdue travels to face in-state rival Indiana on Sunday.
