UNC Wilmington at William & Mary
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — A surging William & Mary looks to continue its climb in the Colonial Athletic Association standings when it hosts a struggling UNC Wilmington team on Sunday at Kaplan Arena.
The Tribe (10-8, 3-3 CAA) have won two straight conference games, including a dominant 55-37 road victory at Hofstra on Monday. William & Mary’s defense has been key, holding opponents to an average of 47.5 points during the win streak.
Guard Cassidy Geddes has led the offensive charge, averaging 21 points in the two wins, including a 22-point performance against Hofstra. She will be a focal point for a Tribe squad seeking its third consecutive victory.
They face a Seahawks team (5-14, 0-7) mired in a seven-game losing streak, all in conference play. UNC Wilmington is coming off a heartbreaking 67-61 overtime loss at Campbell on Tuesday, a game in which they let a late lead slip away.
Despite the team’s struggles, sophomore guard Rori Cox has been a consistent bright spot. She is averaging 18.1 points over her last seven games and is coming off a 29-point, 9-rebound effort in the loss to Campbell. Containing Cox will be a primary defensive objective for the Tribe.
The matchup pits one of the league’s hottest players in Geddes against one of its most prolific scorers in Cox. William & Mary will rely on its recent defensive form to extend UNC Wilmington’s woes, while the Seahawks desperately seek a conference win to halt their slide.
Sunday’s contest is the first of two regular-season meetings between the programs, with a rematch scheduled for March 1 in Wilmington.
Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. EST at Kaplan Arena.
