Drexel at Northeastern
Preview: Drexel Dragons at Northeastern Huskies, Women’s Basketball
BOSTON (Interstat) — A matchup of teams trending in opposite directions will unfold Sunday when the Drexel Dragons visit the Northeastern Huskies in a Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball game at Matthews Arena.
The Dragons (12-7 overall) enter on a three-game winning streak, including a gritty 56-53 road victory at Monmouth last Friday. Drexel has found success with a stifling defense, holding opponents to 53 points or fewer in four of their last six wins. Their recent surge has solidified their position in the upper tier of the conference standings.
Conversely, the Huskies (6-12) look to halt a two-game skid and revive their season. They are coming off a 65-56 loss at Monmouth on Wednesday. Northeastern has struggled to find consistent scoring outside of guard Camryn Collins, who will be the focal point for the Huskies’ offense. Collins is averaging 12.1 points per game in conference play and is coming off a 14-point performance in the loss to Monmouth. Her ability to create offense will be critical against Drexel’s formidable defense.
The teams’ first meeting of the season will be a contrast in styles. Drexel relies on a methodical, defensive-minded approach, while Northeastern will need to accelerate the pace and generate easy baskets to improve its offensive efficiency. The Huskies have shown flashes, including a close double-overtime loss to North Carolina A&T and a road win at Hofstra earlier this month, but have been unable to sustain momentum.
Historically, Matthews Arena has provided a home-court advantage for Northeastern, but they carry a 3-5 record at home this season. Drexel is 5-4 in true road games.
This contest opens a key February stretch for both squads. Drexel will look to solidify its standing, while Northeastern desperately needs a conference win to build confidence before embarking on a challenging road trip next weekend. The rematch is scheduled for Feb. 27 in Philadelphia.
Tip-off is set for Sunday afternoon.
