Baugus Powers Middle Tennessee Past Western Kentucky in Conference USA Matchup

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Interstat) — A dominant performance from Blair Baugus and a blistering shooting display propelled Middle Tennessee to a decisive 81-58 victory over Western Kentucky in a Conference USA women’s basketball game Saturday at Murphy Athletics Center.

The Blue Raiders, improving to 12-9 overall, seized control early with a torrent of three-pointers and never relented, exploiting their significant advantages in offensive rebounding and interior scoring. The Lady Toppers, who fell to 5-15, struggled to find consistent offense outside of brief spurts and were ultimately overwhelmed by Middle Tennessee’s efficiency.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the first quarter, where Middle Tennessee established a commanding lead it would never surrender. After Western Kentucky’s Tia Shelling opened the scoring with a three-pointer, the Blue Raiders responded with a decisive 20-3 run over the final six minutes of the period. The surge was fueled by Alayna Contreras, who scored 11 points in the quarter, including three three-pointers. The run transformed a narrow 7-3 edge into a 26-10 lead by the end of the first, setting a tone of offensive authority that defined the afternoon.

Middle Tennessee’s offensive execution was starkly superior. The Blue Raiders shot 44.4% from the field and an impressive 43.8% from beyond the arc, connecting on 14 three-pointers. They also dominated the paint, outscoring Western Kentucky 24 to 12, and capitalized on second-chance opportunities with 15 offensive rebounds.

Baugus, a 6-foot-1 forward from Waynesboro, Tennessee, was the game’s standout performer, recording a formidable double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds. Her work on the glass, including six offensive rebounds, was instrumental in Middle Tennessee maintaining possession and extending possessions.

Contreras led all scorers with 25 points, adding six assists and four rebounds. Macie Phifer provided 20 points and seven rebounds, while Kirston Verhulst contributed 15 points, all from three-point range. The quartet combined for 75 of the team’s 81 points.

Western Kentucky, which managed only a 31.5% shooting rate from the field, was led by Salma Khedr’s 13 points and seven rebounds. Trinity Rowe added 11 points and five assists. The Lady Toppers were more efficient at the free-throw line, making 15 of 18 attempts, but could not offset Middle Tennessee’s prolific scoring from the field.

The Blue Raiders expanded their lead to 46-29 by halftime and continued to apply pressure in the second half. Western Kentucky showed brief resistance, closing to within 56-50 midway through the third quarter after a 7-0 spurt capped by a Salma Khedr layup. However, Middle Tennessee promptly answered with a 10-2 run to close the quarter, restoring a 64-52 advantage and effectively extinguishing the threat.

Any lingering doubt was removed early in the fourth quarter as Middle Tennessee opened the period with a quick 6-0 burst, pushing the lead to 70-52 and cruising to the finish.

The victory was in line with statistical expectations, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected Middle Tennessee with a 92.6% probability to win. The Blue Raiders have now won two consecutive conference games, while Western Kentucky has dropped three straight.

Middle Tennessee next travels to face Missouri State on Thursday. Western Kentucky will look to regroup on the road at Florida International, also on Thursday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Bowling Green on Feb. 21.
