Hawaii Holds Off UC Irvine Rally in Defensive Struggle

HONOLULU (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined more by grit than grace, the Hawaii Warriors held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by the UC Irvine Anteaters to secure a 55-50 victory in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at a tense Stan Sheriff Center.

A crowd of 1,820 watched as the Warriors, improving to 11-9 overall, avenged a 50-47 loss to the Anteaters just 19 days prior. UC Irvine, which entered the contest with a 17-3 record and a 60.6% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, fell to 17-4 with the road defeat.

The game’s defining characteristic was its offensive inefficiency. Both teams combined to shoot just 31.8% from the field. Hawaii edged the Anteaters by scoring 55 points on 66 possessions, an offensive rating of 82.7, while UC Irvine managed only 50 points on 65 trips, a rating of 77.2. The difference ultimately came at the free-throw line, where Hawaii converted 15 of 20 attempts compared to UC Irvine’s 8-of-10 performance.

The contest unfolded in starkly contrasting halves. The first three quarters were a low-scoring grind. UC Irvine led 10-6 after a first quarter where both teams shot under 25%. Hawaii found a slight rhythm before halftime, taking a 17-15 lead into the break after holding the Anteaters to just seven points in the second period. The Warriors extended their advantage to 33-25 by the end of the third, seemingly in control.

The most important part of the game, however, was UC Irvine’s explosive and desperate fourth-quarter surge. Trailing by eight and having mustered only 25 points through 30 minutes, the Anteaters’ offense suddenly ignited. They erupted for 25 points in the final frame, nearly matching their total from the first three quarters combined. Guard Jada Wynn, who finished with a team-high 17 points, spearheaded the charge, attacking the basket and drawing fouls.

With under a minute to play, the comeback nearly reached its climax. After Hawaii’s Bailey Flavell hit two free throws to put the Warriors up 52-50 with 9 seconds left, UC Irvine had a chance to tie or take the lead. Wynn attempted a game-tying three-pointer, but Flavell, who led all scorers with 18 points, blocked the shot. Hawaii’s Kyra Webb secured the critical defensive rebound, was fouled, and sank two free throws with 4 seconds remaining to seal the five-point victory.

Beyond the scoring leaders, Hawaii’s defense was anchored by its rim protection. The Warriors blocked seven shots, with Ritorya Tamilo contributing three rejections to go with four points and three assists. Webb added 10 points and a key block. For UC Irvine, Nohealani Stores provided a spark off the bench with eight points, but the Anteaters were hampered by a stagnant offense for long stretches, tallying only four assists as a team.

The win moves Hawaii to 2-1 in a tight series of recent meetings between the two programs. Both teams continue Big West play on the road this weekend, with Hawaii hosting Long Beach State on Saturday and UC Irvine traveling to face Cal State Bakersfield on Feb. 5.
