Wildcats Grind Out Defensive Win Over Trailblazers

ST. GEORGE, Utah (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined more by grit than grace, Abilene Christian grinded out a 54-46 victory over Utah Tech in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Burns Arena.

The Wildcats, despite shooting just 32.8% from the field and 21.2% from three-point range, leaned on a disruptive defense that forced 21 Trailblazer turnovers to improve to 15-5 overall. Utah Tech, which shot a slightly better 39.1% but made only one three-pointer, fell to 6-13.

The game’s pivotal stretch arrived late in the third quarter and bled into the fourth, transforming a tight contest into a working margin for the visitors. Trailing 32-30 with under a minute left in the third, Abilene Christian’s Payton Hull connected on a tough turnaround jumper. On the ensuing possession, Emma Troxell stole the ball from Utah Tech’s Brie Crittendon, setting up a final shot that missed but preserved momentum.

That sequence ignited a decisive 12-2 run that spanned the quarter break. The Wildcats opened the fourth with a Troxell layup, assisted by Hull, and after a Utah Tech basket, Troxell drew a foul and sank two free throws. Hull then found Troxell again for another layup, pushing the lead to 38-34. The Wildcats’ defense tightened, and when Natalia Chavez assisted on a Hull layup with 3:17 remaining, the advantage reached 44-42 and Abilene Christian never led by fewer than two possessions again.

The Wildcats were led by balanced scoring. Natalia Chavez, a guard from Cochiti Pueblo, New Mexico, scored 12 points. Erin Woodson of Richmond, Virginia, and Payton Hull of Peaster, Texas, each added 11 points, with Hull contributing three assists. Emma Troxell of Bushland, Texas, finished with eight points and a key defensive presence.

Utah Tech was carried by the offensive efforts of Paige Cofer. The 6-foot sophomore from Eagle, Idaho, scored a game-high 18 points, showcasing an effective mid-range game against the Wildcats’ interior defense. Guard Chardonnay Hartley of Harlem, New York, added 10 points and five assists, while Kaylee Borden of Anadarko, Oklahoma, chipped in seven points and four assists.

The first half was a low-scoring affair, with both teams tied 12-12 after one quarter and 22-22 at halftime. The third quarter saw Abilene Christian edge ahead by two points, setting the stage for the critical run that decided the contest.

Statistically, the game was a mirror in many categories, with each team recording nine assists and nine steals. Abilene Christian’s slight advantages in three-pointers made (7-1) and free-throw percentage (81.8% to 69.2%) proved significant in a game where points were at a premium. The Wildcats also scored 14 points off Utah Tech turnovers, capitalizing just enough on the Trailblazers’ mistakes.

The announced attendance at Burns Arena was 597.

The victory extends Abilene Christian’s winning streak to three games following conference wins over California Baptist and Southern Utah. Utah Tech has now lost four of its last five.

Abilene Christian travels to face Southern Utah on Saturday. Utah Tech remains at home to host Tarleton State, also on Saturday.
