Louisville Routs Stanford Behind Ziegler’s 22 Points

LOUISVILLE, Calif. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of defensive pressure and offensive execution, the Louisville women’s basketball team secured a decisive 84-66 victory over Stanford on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion. The win improved the Cardinals to 20-3 on the season, while the Cardinal fell to 15-7.

The most important part of the game was Louisville’s overwhelming first-half performance, which effectively decided the contest before halftime. The Cardinals established control early with a blistering offensive start and a disruptive defensive scheme that forced Stanford into uncharacteristic mistakes. Louisville opened the game on a 10-2 run, highlighted by two three-pointers from Mackenly Randolph, and never looked back. They led 22-15 after the first quarter and then exploded for 26 points in the second period, taking a 48-30 lead into the locker room.

Stanford struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Louisville’s active defense. The home team committed 22 turnovers for the game, which Louisville converted into 26 points. The Cardinals also dominated inside, outscoring Stanford 44-30 in the paint and grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to Stanford’s six. While both teams shot similarly from the floor, Louisville’s significant advantages in possession generation and points off turnovers proved insurmountable.

Laura Ziegler led all scorers with 22 points for Louisville, showcasing an efficient inside game. She was complemented by Mackenly Randolph, who added 14 points, and a balanced attack that saw Tajianna Roberts score 10 points and dish out four assists. Elif Istanbulluoglu provided a key spark off the bench with 10 points. For Stanford, Courtney Ogden scored 16 points, while Shay Ijiwoye and Chloe Clardy each contributed 15. Hailee Swain added 12 points for the Cardinal.

The second half saw Stanford attempt to mount a challenge, cutting the deficit to 13 points on several occasions in the third quarter. However, each Stanford push was met with a timely response from Louisville. A critical sequence came late in the third when, after a Stanford basket made it 46-39, Louisville’s Ziegler answered with a three-pointer to stretch the lead back to 10. The Cardinals closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 63-46, effectively extinguishing any lingering hope of a Stanford comeback.

Louisville maintained its defensive intensity in the fourth quarter, never allowing Stanford to get closer than 15 points. The Cardinals’ depth was on full display as reserves like Skylar Jones, who finished with 11 points, provided consistent scoring. The game concluded with Louisville’s bench players on the floor, securing the 18-point margin.

The victory continued a strong run for Louisville, which has now won seven of its last eight games. Stanford, coming off an overtime loss to California, has dropped two straight Atlantic Coast Conference contests. According to pregame metrics, Louisville was projected with a 69.9% probability to win and covered the spread as a 7.5-point favorite. The total score of 150 surpassed the over/under line of 138.5.

Louisville next travels to face California on Sunday, while Stanford will host Notre Dame the same day.
