SIU Edwardsville at Morehead State
Preview: SIU Edwardsville Cougars at Morehead State Eagles
HALDEMAN, Ky. (Interstat) — A tight Ohio Valley Conference race brings a quick rematch to E.T. Johnson Arena on Thursday as the Morehead State Eagles host the SIU Edwardsville Cougars in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball clash.
The Eagles (12-9 overall) edged the Cougars (10-10) 54-49 in Edwardsville just over three weeks ago on Jan. 3. That result is part of a recent surge for Morehead State, which has won seven of its last nine games. SIUE, meanwhile, has shown resilience, snapping a five-game skid with consecutive home wins last week.
A key matchup will feature two of the conference’s top performers. SIU Edwardsville will lean on forward Syanne Mohamed, who is coming off a dominant 15-point, 15-rebound, four-assist, four-block effort in a 67-62 win over Tennessee Tech on Jan. 24. Mohamed has recorded double-doubles in two of her last three games.
Morehead State counters with guard Laura Toffali, who poured in a season-high 22 points in a 52-48 victory over Eastern Illinois on Jan. 24. Toffali has been a consistent scoring threat, reaching double figures in five of her last eight contests. She had six points and eight rebounds in the earlier win over SIUE.
The Eagles have used a stout defense to fuel their success, holding opponents under 55 points in four of their last five wins. They will be tested by a Cougars squad that found its offensive rhythm in the second half against Tennessee Tech.
For SIUE, replicating their recent home success on the road remains a challenge. The Cougars are seeking their first road victory since mid-December. Morehead State has been strong at home, boasting a 7-2 record in Haldeman this season.
Thursday’s contest is the only scheduled meeting between the teams in Kentucky this season. The outcome will impact the middle of the OVC standings as the regular season enters its final month.
Tip-off is set for Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, at E.T. Johnson Arena.
