Virginia at Wake Forest
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Interstat) — The Virginia women’s basketball team looks to rebound from a heartbreaking overtime loss when it visits Wake Forest in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Thursday night at Joel Coliseum.
The Cavaliers (14-6) fell 78-76 to North Carolina State on Saturday despite a stellar performance from guard Kymora Johnson, who scored 26 points and dished out nine assists. Virginia had won four of its previous five before the narrow defeat.
Johnson has been the engine for Virginia, averaging 18.1 points and 7.1 assists per game in conference play. She is coming off a stretch that included a 31-point, 11-assist effort in a double-overtime win at Florida State on Jan. 4.
Wake Forest (12-9) seeks to end a five-game skid, most recently a 85-57 home loss to Virginia Tech. The Demon Deacons’ last win was a 74-55 victory at Pittsburgh on New Year’s Day.
Forward Grace Oliver has been a consistent contributor for Wake Forest during its difficult stretch, averaging 12.3 points over the last seven games. She posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in an overtime loss at Clemson on Jan. 18.
Virginia holds a distinct edge in recent scoring, averaging 73.2 points in ACC play compared to Wake Forest’s 63.6. The Cavaliers also boast a stronger defensive profile, allowing just 66.1 points per game overall.
The Demon Deacons will need to contain Johnson and find offensive rhythm to snap their losing streak. Virginia aims to leverage its backcourt advantage and interior presence of players like Caitlin Weimar, who had 10 rebounds against NC State, to secure a road conference win.
This game is the only regular-season meeting scheduled between the teams this season. Following this contest, Virginia visits Virginia Tech on Sunday, while Wake Forest travels to Duke.
