Akron at Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (Interstat) — The Bowling Green Falcons will look to halt a three-game skid when they host the struggling Akron Zips in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at the Stroh Center.
Bowling Green (10-9 overall) has lost three straight, including a heartbreaking 65-64 defeat at Massachusetts last Saturday. The Falcons have shown resilience at home this season, however, and will be favored against an Akron team that has found wins elusive.
The Zips (3-16) enter on a seven-game losing streak, most recently falling 74-53 to Central Michigan on Jan. 21. Akron’s last victory came on Dec. 21 against Le Moyne.
A key matchup will feature each team’s top recent performer. For Akron, guard Shaena Brew has been a bright spot, averaging 11.4 points and 3.4 assists over her last seven games. She scored 16 points in the loss to Central Michigan.
Bowling Green counters with forward Taya Ellis, who is coming off a dominant 20-point, 9-rebound effort in the narrow loss to UMass. Her production will be crucial for a Falcons offense that has been inconsistent during its recent slide.
Historically, Bowling Green has controlled the series, winning 10 of the last 11 meetings. The Falcons won both contests last season.
For Akron, the path to an upset likely requires containing Ellis and finding consistent scoring beyond Brew. The Zips have allowed 79.3 points per game during their seven-game losing streak.
Bowling Green aims to rediscover its defensive identity after allowing an average of 66 points during its losing streak, well above its season average. A return home could provide the necessary spark.
Wednesday’s contest is the only scheduled meeting between the teams this regular season. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST.
