Hawaii at Cal State Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — Two Big West women’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Thursday when the Hawaii Warriors visit the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners at the Icardo Center.
Hawaii (8-9, 2-3 Big West) enters on a modest upswing, having won its last two conference games decisively. The Warriors routed Cal Poly 86-46 on Jan. 15 before defeating UC Santa Barbara 67-50 last Saturday. Guard Keiara Curtis has been central to that success, averaging 17.5 points and 4.0 assists in those victories. Over her last five games, Curtis is averaging 15.4 points.
Cal State Bakersfield (6-12, 1-4) looks to halt a four-game skid, all in conference play. Their most recent outing was an 84-66 loss at UC San Diego on Jan. 17. Guard Morgan Hawkins leads the Roadrunners’ offense, coming off a 14-point, 9-assist performance in that defeat. She averages 7.8 points and a team-high 4.3 assists per game.
The Warriors have found a rhythm offensively during their win streak, averaging 76.5 points. Alongside Curtis, forward Saniyah Neverson (15 points) and center Imani Perez (6 points, 3 blocks) were key contributors against UCSB. Hawaii will aim to exploit a Roadrunners defense that has allowed 80.5 points per game during its current losing streak.
Conversely, Cal State Bakersfield will need more consistent scoring to support Hawkins. Forwards Maria Dias (15 points) and Marley Langi (17 points) provided a boost against UC San Diego, but the team has struggled offensively in several conference losses, including a 42-point outing at UC Riverside on Jan. 8.
This is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They will meet again in Honolulu on Feb. 12. Hawaii holds a slight edge in the overall series, but the Roadrunners won the last matchup in Bakersfield.
Thursday’s contest tips off at 7 p.m. PST. Hawaii continues its road trip at Cal State Northridge on Saturday. Cal State Bakersfield travels to face Cal Poly next Thursday.
