North Florida at Bellarmine
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Interstat) — Two ASUN Conference women’s basketball teams seeking a foothold will meet Thursday when the North Florida Ospreys visit the Bellarmine Knights at Knights Hall.
North Florida (6-11, 1-3 ASUN) enters with a better overall record but has lost five of its last six games. The Ospreys are coming off a 79-72 home loss to Central Arkansas on Saturday, despite a career-high 27 points from guard Dezuray McGill. The junior has been a bright spot, averaging 10.8 points over her last six contests and scoring in double figures in three of them.
Bellarmine (2-17, 0-4) has faced a brutal schedule and is mired in a 12-game losing streak. The Knights have been defeated by an average of 38.3 points in their last three outings, including a 90-46 loss to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Guard Kayce Hyman provides offensive sparks, averaging 12.0 points per game over her last six. She scored 19 in the loss to EKU.
The Knights’ struggles are underscored by nonconference road losses to powerhouses like Notre Dame (110-38), Arizona (105-59) and Louisville (100-37). North Florida has also faced ranked competition, falling to then-Clemson 84-62 in December.
This matchup represents a critical opportunity for both squads. North Florida will look to leverage its more potent offense, which has shown the ability to score in the 60s and 70s in conference play. Bellarmine, which has not scored more than 65 points since Dec. 7, desperately needs to find an offensive rhythm to snap its extended skid.
The Ospreys won the only prior meeting last season, 66-55, in Jacksonville.
After this game, North Florida travels to face Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Bellarmine remains at home to host Jacksonville on Saturday.
