Iowa at Maryland
Preview: Iowa Faces Maryland in Top-10 Big Ten Showdown
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — A pivotal Big Ten women’s basketball clash is set for Thursday when the Iowa Hawkeyes visit the Maryland Terrapins at Xfinity Center.
Both teams enter with strong overall records, but contrasting recent fortunes. Iowa (16-2, 6-0 Big Ten) carries a nine-game winning streak, last defeating Michigan State 75-68 on Sunday. Maryland (17-3, 5-2) looks to rebound from a 97-67 road loss to then-UCLA on the same day.
The matchup features two of the conference’s most dynamic players. Iowa’s Hannah Stuelke has been a consistent force, averaging 17.8 points over her last six games. She posted 22 points and five assists in the win over Michigan State. For Maryland, Oluchi Okananwa provides explosive scoring, having dropped 34 points against Indiana and 27 against Ohio State this month, though she was held to seven points in a win at Southern California last week.
Iowa’s streak has been built on a balanced attack. Alongside Stuelke, Ava Heiden added 20 points against the Spartans. The Hawkeyes’ last loss was a 74-69 setback at Iowa State on Dec. 10.
Maryland, despite the lopsided loss at UCLA, has been dominant at home, winning all 10 contests in College Park this season by an average margin of 48.2 points. Their conference losses came against Ohio State and Illinois, both by three points.
This game is the only scheduled regular-season meeting between the teams. Iowa’s high-powered offense, averaging 80.2 points per game, will test a Maryland defense that had been stout prior to the UCLA game.
The winner gains crucial positioning in the crowded top tier of the Big Ten standings. Iowa next hosts Ohio State on Sunday. Maryland continues a tough stretch, hosting Washington next Wednesday.
Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST Thursday.
