Appalachian State at Texas State

Preview of Wednesday’s Sun Belt Women’s Basketball Matchup

SAN MARCOS, Texas (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in Sun Belt Conference play will meet Wednesday when the Texas State Bobcats host the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Strahan Coliseum.

Both squads enter with losing records, looking to climb back to .500. Appalachian State (8-9 overall) has dropped four of its last five games, including a 79-57 road loss at Georgia State on Saturday. Texas State (7-10) has lost three straight, most recently a 67-63 home defeat to Troy on Saturday.

The matchup features two of the league’s top individual scorers. Appalachian State will lean on guard Emma Smith, who is coming off an 18-point, 6-rebound performance against Georgia State. Over her last six games, Smith has averaged 12.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists, including a 17-point, 11-rebound, 5-assist outing in a win over Southern Mississippi on Jan. 10.

Texas State counters with guard Saniya Burks, who exploded for a season-high 27 points in the loss to Troy. Burks has been a consistent offensive threat, scoring in double figures in four of her last six contests.

The Mountaineers’ recent struggles have been marked by offensive inconsistency, failing to reach 60 points in three of their last four losses. The Bobcats, meanwhile, have faced defensive challenges during their skid, allowing an average of 76 points per game in those three losses.

Historically, the series has been tightly contested. Wednesday’s game could hinge on which team establishes defensive control and which star guard can provide the most efficient scoring punch.

Following this contest, Appalachian State travels to face Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. Texas State remains at home to host Old Dominion on Saturday.
