Nelson Powers Fort Wayne Past Cleveland State in Horizon League Matchup

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a Horizon League clash defined by a blistering start and a resilient finish, the Fort Wayne Mastodons used a dominant first quarter to establish a commanding lead and then held off a persistent Cleveland State Vikings squad for an 80-70 victory in women’s college basketball Wednesday night at Gates Sports Center.

The Mastodons, improving to 12-8 overall, seized control from the opening tip, racing out to a 27-14 lead after the first period. Fort Wayne’s offensive efficiency was staggering in the opening frame, connecting on 11 of 17 field goal attempts, including three from beyond the arc, while the Vikings struggled to find their footing against an active Fort Wayne defense.

The catalyst for the early surge was junior guard Alana Nelson of Springport, Michigan. Nelson scored 11 of her game-high 23 points in the first quarter, setting an aggressive tone that Cleveland State could never fully counter. Her performance, coupled with a stifling team defense that forced seven first-quarter turnovers, built a cushion the Vikings spent the rest of the night trying to erase.

Cleveland State, which fell to 15-6, chipped away at the deficit throughout the middle quarters. Led by the interior presence of Izabella Zingaro, a 6-foot-4 junior from Bolton, Canada, who finished with 22 points, and the backcourt scoring of Jada Leonard from the Bronx, New York, who added 18, the Vikings trimmed the Fort Wayne lead to as few as seven points on multiple occasions. A 22-point third quarter from Cleveland State brought the score to 64-56 entering the final period, applying significant pressure on the home team.

The most critical juncture of the game came early in the fourth quarter. With the Vikings’ momentum building, Fort Wayne’s defense stiffened and key role players delivered. After a Macey Fegan layup for Cleveland State made it 66-60 with 8:48 remaining, the Mastodons embarked on a decisive 9-2 run over the next three minutes. The sequence was capped by a crucial 3-pointer from Destiny Macharia, assisted by Lauren Lee, that pushed the lead back to 13 points at 75-62 with 5:59 to play. Cleveland State would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

While Nelson’s scoring paved the way, Fort Wayne’s victory was a product of superior shooting and timely defensive plays. The Mastodons shot 51.8% from the field and an efficient 39.3% from 3-point range, making 11 triples. Cleveland State, by contrast, managed only 38.5% shooting and a frigid 2-of-12 from deep. Fort Wayne also protected the rim effectively, registering six blocked shots, with Lili Krasovec and Avery Wagner each contributing three. Krasovec added nine points, three blocks, and two steals in just 15 minutes of action.

Fegan, a junior from Bentley, Michigan, provided a third scoring option for Cleveland State with 16 points, but the Vikings’ offense often bogged down against Fort Wayne’s disciplined scheme. The Mastodons, despite committing 15 turnovers equal to Cleveland State, won the possession battle by limiting the Vikings to just nine offensive rebounds and converting their own opportunities at a higher rate, evidenced by an offensive rating of 109.4 compared to Cleveland State’s 93.8.

Fort Wayne also received balanced contributions. Rylee Bess of Pickerington, Ohio, scored 13 points and dished out three assists, while Lauren Lee orchestrated the offense with four assists. Jordan Reid from New Palestine, Indiana, chipped in nine points and four assists.

The Mastodons’ early explosion proved insurmountable, as Cleveland State’s valiant comeback attempt was repeatedly stymied by Fort Wayne’s ability to answer with a critical basket or defensive stop. The win gives Fort Wayne a key conference victory as they prepare for a rematch with these same Vikings in Cleveland on Feb. 7.

Cleveland State, which had won three straight Horizon League games coming in, will look to regroup on the road at Youngstown State this Sunday. Fort Wayne travels to face Northern Kentucky on Saturday. An announced crowd of 535 at the Gates Sports Center watched the Mastodons secure the victory, which was projected with a 60.5% probability by Interstat’s ELO system.
