Northern Colorado Pulls Away Late to Defeat Sacramento State
GARDEN CITY, Colo. (Interstat) — A dominant fourth-quarter surge propelled the Northern Colorado women’s basketball team to a decisive 68-46 victory over Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference matchup Saturday at Butler-Hancock Athletic Center.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 670, was a tale of two halves, with the Bears methodically pulling away after halftime to improve to 14-5 overall. The Hornets, who entered the contest on a three-game winning streak, fell to an even 9-9.
For three quarters, Sacramento State managed to hang within striking distance despite significant offensive struggles. The Hornets shot just 33.3% from the field for the game and committed 22 turnovers, which Northern Colorado converted into 23 points. The Bears, by contrast, operated with greater efficiency, scoring on exactly 100 points per 100 possessions and capitalizing at the free-throw line, where they made 16 of 19 attempts.
The contest remained competitive through the first 30 minutes. Northern Colorado led 15-7 after a first quarter defined by sloppy play from both sides, and took a 27-19 advantage into halftime. The Bears extended their lead slightly in the third, outscoring the Hornets 17-15 to carry a 44-34 margin into the final period.
The most important part of the game unfolded decisively in the fourth quarter. Northern Colorado erupted for 24 points while holding Sacramento State to just 12, turning a ten-point lead into a 22-point rout. The Bears’ offense, led by guard Heather Baymon, found another gear, while their defense consistently stifled Sacramento State’s attempts to mount a comeback. The Hornets managed only five made field goals in the quarter as the Bears sealed the game with a 24-12 run.
Baymon, a junior from Phoenix, Arizona, was the catalyst for Northern Colorado, finishing with a game-high 24 points. She was efficient from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, adding a key steal during the fourth-quarter push. She received strong support in the frontcourt from Aniah Hall of Temple, Texas, who scored 14 points, grabbed multiple offensive rebounds, and recorded two blocks, and Tatum West of Combine, Texas, who added 15 points and nine rebounds.
Sacramento State was led by Rubi Gray of Devonport, Australia, who scored 15 points. Benthe Versteeg of Amsterdam, Netherlands, contributed 12 points, but also committed eight of her team’s 22 turnovers. The Hornets’ offensive rating of 71.5 for the game underscored their difficulties in generating consistent scoring against the Bears’ defense.
Northern Colorado’s victory solidified its strong start to conference play and showcased its ability to overwhelm an opponent in the closing stages. For Sacramento State, the loss highlighted ongoing offensive challenges, as the team’s shooting woes and turnover issues proved too significant to overcome on the road against one of the Big Sky’s top teams.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Northern Colorado was projected with a 78.20 percent probability to win the contest, a forecast borne out by their commanding final-quarter performance.
Northern Colorado travels to face Montana State on Monday. Sacramento State returns home to host Idaho on Thursday.
