Army Holds Off American Rally for Patriot League Road Win

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — The Army women’s basketball team leaned on its defensive pressure and a dominant performance from its backcourt to grind out a 63-56 victory over American on Saturday in a Patriot League contest at Bender Arena.

The Black Knights, improving to 14-3 overall, used a stifling defensive effort to build an early lead and withstand several pushes from the Eagles, who fell to 4-13. The game was ultimately decided by Army’s ability to convert American’s mistakes into points and a decisive scoring run in the third quarter that provided a cushion the home team could not overcome.

Army set the tone from the opening tip, forcing five first-quarter turnovers and capitalizing with a 9-0 run midway through the period. Reese Ericson of Lake Oswego, Oregon, ignited the spurt with a 3-pointer, and Taylor Wilson followed with a driving layup to give the Black Knights a 15-6 lead they would not relinquish. Army led 17-10 after one quarter despite shooting just 36% from the field, a testament to its extra opportunities created by defense and offensive rebounding.

American, led by the dynamic scoring of guard Molly Driscoll of Allentown, Pennsylvania, fought back in the second quarter. The Eagles tightened their defense, holding Army to nine points in the period, and used a 7-2 run capped by a Driscoll layup to close the gap to 26-27 at halftime. Driscoll had 11 of her team-high 20 points in the first half.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded early in the third quarter. With Army’s lead trimmed to a single point, the Black Knights unleashed a 13-2 run over a four-minute span to seize control. The surge was fueled by the duo of Camryn Tade of Southlake, Texas, and Kya Smith of Lubbock, Texas. Tade scored eight points during the run, including a 3-pointer, while Smith added a layup and facilitated the offense. The run pushed Army’s advantage to 40-30, and the Black Knights carried a 47-38 lead into the final period.

American made a final charge in the fourth quarter. Trailing 53-42 after a Smith 3-pointer with 6:26 remaining, the Eagles mounted a 9-0 run. Anna Rescifina of Messina, Italy, hit a 3-pointer, Charlotte Tuhy of Madison, New Jersey, scored inside, and Laura Nogues of Sabadell, Spain, sank two free throws to cut the deficit to 53-51 with 4:12 left.

Army responded with the poise of a veteran team. Tade calmly sank two free throws following a technical foul on Driscoll, and after an American turnover, Ericson hit one of two from the line to extend the lead back to five. The Eagles would get no closer than four points the rest of the way as Army closed the game by making five of its final six free-throw attempts in the final 37 seconds to seal the victory.

The statistical story of the game was written in the turnover column and points off those mistakes. Army committed only five turnovers while forcing American into 13. The Black Knights converted those extra possessions into 21 points, compared to just 13 for the Eagles. Army also dominated inside, outscoring American 30-22 in the paint and grabbing 10 offensive rebounds.

Tade led all scorers with 20 points, adding two assists and two steals in 30 minutes. Ericson provided crucial support with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Smith recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high four assists, while also contributing four offensive rebounds. Brooke Wilson of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, anchored the defense with four steals.

For American, Driscoll’s 20 points and four assists led the way. Madisyn Moore-Nicholson of Odenton, Maryland, added 10 points. Tuhy was a force defensively with six rebounds and a blocked shot in 38 minutes.

The victory extends Army’s winning streak to four games as they continue to sit near the top of the Patriot League standings. American, despite the loss, showed resilience in rallying multiple times but could not overcome its ball-handling issues against Army’s persistent defense.

Army next hosts Bucknell on Wednesday. American travels to face Colgate, also on Wednesday.
