Lady Volunteers Dominate Razorbacks in SEC Matchup

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Tennessee Lady Volunteers delivered a dominant defensive performance, overwhelming the Arkansas Razorbacks 85-50 in a Southeastern Conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Thompson-Boling Arena.

From the opening tip, Tennessee established a suffocating pressure that Arkansas never solved. The Razorbacks committed 23 turnovers, which the Lady Volunteers converted into 27 points. Tennessee also tallied 11 steals and seven blocks, disrupting Arkansas’s offensive flow at every turn. Arkansas managed just five assists against those 23 giveaways, a stark illustration of its offensive struggles.

The game’s decisive stretch came early. After Arkansas’s Jada Bates hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring, Tennessee responded with a 20-3 run over the next six minutes to seize control. The run was fueled by Tennessee’s defense and balanced scoring, with Janiah Barker, Jaida Civil and Zee Spearman all contributing.

Tennessee’s lead ballooned to 29-11 by the end of the first quarter and never dipped below 16 points thereafter. The Razorbacks shot a frigid 27.3% from the field for the game, including 3 of 18 from 3-point range. Their offensive rating of 62.4 points per 100 possessions underscored the futility of navigating Tennessee’s defensive schemes.

Spearman, a 6-foot-4 forward from Dacula, Georgia, was the game’s standout performer. She finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks in just 26 minutes, continuing a strong stretch of play for the Lady Volunteers. Her interior presence on both ends was pivotal.

Mia Pauldo added 18 points and four assists for Tennessee, while Civil contributed 12 points and six rebounds. Barker chipped in 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.

For Arkansas, Jada Bates battled for 13 points and nine rebounds. Ashlynn Chlarson scored 10 points and grabbed seven boards. But the Razorbacks’ offense was consistently out of sync, hampered by Tennessee’s length and activity.

The Lady Volunteers improved to 12-3 overall. They shot 38.3% from the field and connected on 11 3-pointers, but it was their defense that set the tone and built the insurmountable lead.

Arkansas fell to 11-8 with the loss, its fourth straight in SEC play. The Razorbacks have struggled offensively during the conference slate, failing to reach 60 points in three of their four league games.

Tennessee’s defensive intensity never relented, holding Arkansas to single-digit scoring in the second quarter and allowing just 19 points in the entire second half. The Lady Volunteers also won the rebounding battle 52-48 and outscored the Razorbacks 36-22 in the paint.

The victory was Tennessee’s third consecutive in conference play as it prepares for a road test at Alabama next Sunday. Arkansas will look to regroup on the road at Missouri on Thursday.
