Jaloni Cambridge’s 41 Points Lead Ohio State Past Illinois in Big Ten Road Win

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — In a pivotal early-January clash between Big Ten contenders, Jaloni Cambridge delivered a career-defining performance, scoring 41 points to will Ohio State to a 78-69 road victory over Illinois on Wednesday night at State Farm Center.

The sophomore guard’s spectacular outing, which included six assists, propelled the Buckeyes to a critical conference win in front of a crowd of 4,237. Ohio State improved to 14-2 overall, while Illinois dropped to 13-3.

The game’s defining sequence arrived late in the fourth quarter, transforming a tense battle into a decisive Buckeye triumph. With Ohio State clinging to a 63-60 lead and just over two minutes remaining, Illinois’ Berry Wallace connected on a deep 3-pointer to tie the game, sending a surge through the home crowd. The momentum was fleeting. On the ensuing possession, Cambridge calmly answered with a 3-pointer of her own, restoring the Buckeye lead for good.

Illinois never recovered. Following a defensive stop, Cambridge then stole an errant Illinois pass and converted a fast-break layup, extending the lead to five. She capped the personal 5-0 run by drawing a foul and sinking two free throws, pushing the advantage to 70-63 with 1:13 left. That explosive, 90-second burst by Cambridge effectively sealed the outcome, turning a deadlock into a two-possession game that Illinois could not overcome.

The contest was a tale of contrasting halves. Illinois started strong, leveraging its interior presence to take a 22-19 lead after the first quarter behind Cearah Parchment and Wallace. The Buckeyes, however, tightened their defense in the second quarter, holding the Fighting Illini to 14 points to take a slim 36-36 tie into halftime.

Ohio State’s defensive intensity reached its peak in the third quarter, where they limited Illinois to just 10 points on a series of forced turnovers and contested shots. That defensive stand allowed the Buckeyes to build a 52-46 lead heading into the final period, setting the stage for Cambridge’s closing heroics.

Chance Gray provided vital support for Ohio State with 18 points and four assists. Kylee Kitts added 10 points, and Elsa Lemmilä contributed five points, four assists and a key defensive presence.

Illinois was led by Parchment, the 6-foot-3 forward from Whitby, Canada, who scored 20 points. Wallace, a 6-1 guard from Pickerington, Ohio, added 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Destiny Jackson chipped in eight points and three assists for the Fighting Illini.

The victory marked Ohio State’s third straight win and avenged a non-conference loss to UCLA in late December. For Illinois, it was a second consecutive setback following a road loss to Michigan State on Sunday.

Ohio State next travels to face Maryland on Sunday. Illinois will hit the road for a game at Penn State, also on Sunday.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Ohio State entered with a 53.7% probability to win. The Buckeyes covered the pregame spread of -1.5. The total points scored, 147, fell under the over/under line of 150.5.
