Idaho State Women Cruise Past Sacramento State in Big Sky Opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Idaho State Bengals opened their Big Sky Conference schedule with a decisive defensive performance, stifling the Sacramento State Hornets in a 61-46 women’s basketball victory on Thursday night at Colberg Court.

The Bengals, now 8-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play, never trailed, establishing control with a dominant first quarter and maintaining a double-digit cushion for the final 33 minutes of the contest. The Hornets fell to 6-8 overall and 0-1 in the Big Sky.

Idaho State’s defense set the tone from the opening tip, forcing Sacramento State into a series of early miscues and poor shots. The Bengals opened the game on a 9-0 run, holding the Hornets scoreless for nearly the first four minutes. Sacramento State managed just nine points in the opening quarter on 4-of-16 shooting, while Idaho State, led by early buckets from Alyse Aby and Tasia Jordan, built a 20-9 lead.

The most critical stretch of the game came late in the second quarter as Sacramento State attempted to claw back. After a three-pointer from the Hornets’ Jaety Mandaquit cut the deficit to 14-11 with 6:45 remaining in the half, Idaho State responded with a 9-0 surge. The run was capped by a three-pointer from Maeva Gauffrenet, assisted by Aspen Caldwell, pushing the lead back to 23-11. The Bengals entered halftime with a 37-20 advantage, having held Sacramento State to 28.6% shooting in the first half.

Idaho State’s defense was the story, as they limited the Hornets to 28.6% shooting for the game, including a frigid 4-of-24 from three-point range. Sacramento State’s offensive rating of 64.7 points per 100 possessions underscored the Bengals’ disruptive effort. Despite committing 22 turnovers, many against Sacramento State’s 17 steals, Idaho State compensated with efficient scoring, shooting 46.3% from the field and 41.7% from beyond the arc.

Kacey Spink led all scorers with 11 points for Idaho State, adding two assists and two blocks in 31 minutes. Aspen Caldwell contributed 14 points, while Tasia Jordan added 11 points and two assists. The Bengals shared the scoring load, with Piper Carlson adding seven points and Gauffrenet chipping in six on a pair of three-pointers.

Sacramento State was led by Rubi Gray’s 16 points, though she needed 15 shots to reach that total. Keanna Salave’a added nine points. The Hornets’ offense struggled to find consistency, hampered by 15 turnovers of their own and an inability to convert from deep.

Idaho State’s lead ballooned to as many as 21 points in the third quarter. While Sacramento State showed brief flashes, including a 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 35-27, the Bengals promptly answered. Spink immediately drained a three-pointer on the next possession, assisted by Aby, to extinguish the rally and push the lead back to 11. The Hornets would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

The Bengals, who entered the game with a 60.1% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, have now won three straight games and four of their last five. Sacramento State has lost three consecutive contests.

Idaho State continues its road trip at Portland State on Saturday. Sacramento State will look to rebound at home against Weber State, also on Saturday.
