Southern Utah Pulls Away From Utah Tech in Second Half
CEDAR CITY, Utah (Interstat) — The Southern Utah Thunderbirds used a dominant second and third quarter to overcome a hot-shooting start by the Utah Tech Trailblazers and secure a 78-60 victory in a nonconference women’s basketball game Monday night at Centrum Arena.
The game turned decisively in the middle periods after Utah Tech opened the contest with impressive offensive efficiency. The Trailblazers connected on five of their first eight shots, including three from beyond the arc, to build a 23-16 lead after the first quarter. Paige Cofer, who finished with a team-high 18 points, and Maddie Warren, who hit an early three, fueled the fast start.
Southern Utah’s response was immediate and overwhelming. The Thunderbirds tightened their defense and began controlling the glass, sparking a 22-16 second quarter that gave them a 38-39 halftime lead. The momentum fully shifted in the third quarter, where Southern Utah’s defensive pressure suffocated the Utah Tech offense. The Trailblazers managed just six points in the period, shooting 2-of-13 from the field and committing five turnovers. Meanwhile, Southern Utah poured in 22 points, extending their lead to 60-45 and effectively putting the game out of reach.
The most important sequence of the game occurred early in the third quarter, encapsulating the night’s themes. With Southern Utah leading 42-40, the Thunderbirds forced consecutive Utah Tech turnovers. Ava Uhrich stole a pass and, following a missed shot, Brooklyn Fely secured an offensive rebound. On the ensuing possession, Fely hit a jumper off another Uhrich assist. On the next Utah Tech trip, Fely stole the ball again, leading to a Sierra Chambers three-pointer, assisted by Uhrich. That five-point swing in a matter of seconds, fueled by defensive stops and second-chance opportunities, ballooned the lead to 49-40 and Utah Tech never recovered.
Southern Utah’s victory was built on defensive activity and rebounding dominance. The Thunderbirds forced 12 Utah Tech turnovers, converting them into 15 points, and held a staggering 24-8 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to a 24-4 edge in second-chance points. Utah Tech’s offensive rating of 84.5 points per 100 possessions underscored their struggles against the sustained defensive pressure.
Sierra Chambers led all scorers with 19 points for Southern Utah, adding three assists. Brooklyn Fely recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high effort on the boards, while Ava Uhrich filled the stat sheet with 10 points, five assists, and several key defensive plays.
For Utah Tech, Cofer’s 18 points led the way. Chardonnay Hartley added 14 points and Kaylee Borden contributed 11 points and five assists, but the Trailblazers’ offense stalled after the first quarter, managing just 37 points over the final 30 minutes. The team’s three total assists highlighted their difficulties in generating consistent offense against the Thunderbirds’ defense.
Southern Utah improved to 9-4 with the win, while Utah Tech fell to 5-6. Both teams now turn their attention to conference play, with a rematch scheduled in Cedar City on Jan. 24.
