Tommies Defeat Huskies Behind Balanced Effort
SAINT PAUL, Minn. (Interstat) — The Saint Thomas Tommies used a dominant defensive performance and a decisive second-quarter surge to pull away from the Northern Illinois Huskies for a 64-46 victory in a nonconference women’s basketball game Monday afternoon at Schoenecker Arena.
The Tommies, who evened their season record at 7-7, held the Huskies to a season-low offensive output, capitalizing on a stifling interior presence that produced 11 blocked shots and forced 21 turnovers. Northern Illinois, which fell to 2-10, managed just 18 points through the first three quarters before a 20-point fourth-quarter output against the Saint Thomas reserves made the final score more respectable.
The game’s pivotal stretch came in the second quarter. Leading 14-9 after a low-scoring first period, Saint Thomas broke the game open with a 19-9 quarter. The Tommies’ defense was the catalyst, holding Northern Illinois to 3-of-14 shooting from the field in the period while forcing seven Huskies turnovers. The Huskies went scoreless for a stretch of over five minutes, allowing Saint Thomas to build a 33-18 halftime lead that would not be seriously challenged.
Saint Thomas forward Alyssa Sand, a 6-foot-3 junior from Albany, Minnesota, anchored the defensive effort and provided efficient offense. She finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals in 32 minutes, impacting the game on both ends of the floor. Guard Jada Hood, a Saint Paul native, led all Tommies scorers with 15 points, adding six rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Northern Illinois was led by Nevaeh Wingate’s game-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Teresa Mbemba added 12 points and five rebounds for the Huskies, who shot just 31.9% (15 of 47) from the field for the game. The Huskies’ offensive struggles were encapsulated by their 68.6 offensive rating, managing only 46 points on 67 possessions.
Saint Thomas also struggled with its shooting, making just 35.5% (22 of 62) of its attempts and only 5 of 22 from three-point range. However, the Tommies compensated with a massive 19-9 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to a 28-22 edge in points in the paint and 19 points off Northern Illinois turnovers. Their 99.2 offensive rating on 64 possessions proved more than enough.
The Tommies steadily expanded their lead in the third quarter, holding Northern Illinois to eight points to take a 48-26 advantage into the final period. The Huskies’ late 20-point fourth quarter, led by eight points from Wingate, only narrowed the final margin.
Saint Thomas improved to 5-2 at home this season, while Northern Illinois fell to 0-7 on the road. The Tommies will open Summit League play on the road Thursday at South Dakota State. Northern Illinois begins Mid-American Conference action at home Saturday against Ball State.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 318 at Schoenecker Arena. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Saint Thomas was projected with an 80.70 percent probability to win.
