Michigan Outlasts Oregon in Double-Overtime Thriller

EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — In a marathon nonconference clash that required two extra periods to decide, the Michigan women’s basketball team outlasted Oregon 92-87 on Monday night at Matthew Knight Arena.

The Wolverines, who led by as many as 16 points in the first half, saw that advantage evaporate under relentless Oregon pressure before finally securing the victory in the second overtime. The win improved Michigan’s record to 11-1, while the Ducks fell to 12-3.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final minute of the second overtime. With Michigan clinging to a precarious 84-82 lead, Oregon’s Astera Tuhina drained a 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining, pulling the Ducks within a single point at 87-86 and sending the home crowd of 5,439 into a frenzy. Michigan’s ensuing inbound play was disrupted, leading to a foul that sent Macy Brown to the line with just 4 seconds left.

Brown, a guard from East Grand Rapids, Michigan, calmly sank the first free throw to push the lead to two. After an Oregon timeout, she converted the second, forcing the Ducks to attempt a desperation heave. Tuhina’s long 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed, sealing the exhausting victory for the visitors.

The game was a tale of dramatic shifts. Michigan dominated early, using a 21-point first quarter to build a double-digit lead that stretched to 44-28 by halftime. The Wolverines’ offense was fluid, and their defense stifled Oregon’s shooters. The second half, however, belonged to the Ducks. Led by a determined effort from Katie Fiso, Oregon mounted a furious comeback, outscoring Michigan 41-18 across the third and fourth quarters to force overtime, tied at 69-69.

Fiso, a guard from Seattle, was spectacular for Oregon, playing 44 minutes and scoring a game-high 24 points while dishing out four assists. She was instrumental in the comeback, attacking the basket and creating opportunities for her teammates. Ari Long added 14 points, while Mia Jacobs and Ehis Etute each contributed 16 and 12 points, respectively.

Michigan’s balance proved vital in the extra sessions. Syla Swords, a guard from Sudbury, Canada, led the Wolverines with 18 points, including a crucial 3-pointer early in the second overtime. Ashley Sofilkanich and Te’Yala Delfosse each added 16 and 14 points, providing essential interior scoring. Macy Brown finished with 7 points, 5 assists, and several key plays down the stretch, including the decisive free throws.

The first overtime period was a tense, back-and-forth affair, with both teams scoring 7 points. Oregon had a chance to win in the final seconds of the first extra period, but a missed jump shot by Fiso sent the teams to a second overtime tied at 76.

In the second overtime, Michigan managed to create a small cushion. A layup by Delfosse and free throws from Olivia Olson and Brown helped build a lead that Oregon’s late surge could not quite overcome. The Ducks were hampered by foul trouble, particularly to key post players, in the final minutes.

The game, organized by the Big Ten as part of its conference challenge slate, featured 14 ties and 15 lead changes, underscoring its competitive nature. Michigan’s ability to survive Oregon’s second-half onslaught and execute under pressure in the final seconds of double overtime provided the narrow margin of victory.

Michigan will continue its West Coast trip with a game at Washington on Thursday. Oregon will remain at home to face Northwestern on New Year’s Day.
