Cowgirls Dominate Third Quarter to Rout Cardinals
SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — A dominant third-quarter surge propelled the McNeese State Cowgirls to a decisive 74-53 victory over the Incarnate Word Cardinals in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Monday night at the McDermott Convocation Center.
The game, which saw the visiting Cowgirls improve to 8-4 overall, was effectively decided in a 10-minute span after halftime. Leading 28-19 at the break, McNeese State erupted for 28 points in the third quarter, doubling its offensive output from the entire first half and stretching a manageable lead into an insurmountable one.
The catalyst for the runaway was a 14-2 run early in the period that broke the game open. The Cowgirls’ defense fueled the offense, creating turnovers and converting them into easy baskets. A steal by Jalencia Pierre led to a transition layup, and shortly after, Allasia Washington connected on a pull-up jumper to push the lead to 15 points. The Cardinals, who fell to 4-6, struggled to find any consistent answer as McNeese State’s pressure intensified.
Dakota Howard, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Shreveport, Louisiana, spearheaded the Cowgirls’ attack. She scored a game-high 20 points, with 12 coming in the second half, and added three assists. Her work in the paint and from the mid-range was instrumental during the pivotal third-quarter stretch, including a turnaround jumper that capped a key sequence.
She was complemented by guard Tyreona Sibley of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who contributed 18 points. The backcourt duo of Howard and Sibley combined for 38 points, consistently puncturing the Incarnate Word defense.
The Cardinals were led by Londyn Oliphant of Dallas, who finished with 10 points. Raimi McCrary of Allen added nine points, but the team shot poorly from the field and committed numerous turnovers that McNeese State eagerly converted.
The first half was a defensive struggle, with McNeese State taking a 16-8 lead after one quarter and extending it to nine by halftime. Incarnate Word managed just 19 first-half points and never found an offensive rhythm, shooting under 30 percent from the floor for the game.
McNeese State’s depth also proved significant. Carley Hamilton and Kaili Chamberlin each scored nine points, while Washington and Pierre added eight apiece. The Cowgirls’ bench outscored the Cardinals’ reserves, providing crucial energy during the game-changing third quarter.
The most important part of the game was unquestionably the start of the second half. McNeese State emerged from the locker room with heightened defensive intensity and offensive purpose. They scored on their first several possessions, forced Incarnate Word into rushed shots and mistakes, and systematically dismantled any hope of a Cardinals comeback. By the time the third quarter ended with McNeese State leading 56-38, the outcome was beyond doubt.
The victory gives McNeese State momentum heading into its next conference game at Houston Christian on Wednesday. Incarnate Word looks to regroup when it hosts Southeastern Louisiana, also on Wednesday.
The result was a stark reversal of pregame projections, as statistical models heavily favored the Cardinals at home. Instead, McNeese State delivered a comprehensive road performance, leveraging a stifling defense and a balanced scoring effort to secure a convincing conference win.
