Texas Rolls Past Northwestern State to Remain Undefeated

AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — The top-ranked Texas women’s basketball team’s relentless defensive pressure was on full display from the opening tip, overwhelming Northwestern State in a 96-38 victory on Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center.

The Longhorns, extending their perfect start to 13-0, forced the Demons into a staggering 34 turnovers, converting those miscues into a dominant advantage in transition and setting the tone for a lopsided affair in front of 8,471 fans. Northwestern State fell to 5-5.

The most decisive phase of the game came immediately, as Texas unleashed a 15-0 run to start the contest, capitalizing on a flurry of Northwestern State turnovers. The Demons did not score until a Vernell Atamah 3-pointer with 6:20 remaining in the first quarter, by which time the Longhorns had built an insurmountable lead. Texas led 25-9 after the first quarter and never saw its advantage dip below 16 points, methodically expanding it each period.

Sophomore guard Madison Booker, the reigning national player of the week, spearheaded the Texas attack with a game-high 28 points. The Ridgeland, Mississippi, native added two assists and two blocks in 30 minutes, continuing a stretch of exceptional play. She was instrumental in the early onslaught, scoring nine points in the first quarter as the Longhorns seized control.

Point guard Rori Harmon orchestrated the offense with precision, registering a double-double of 11 points and 10 assists. The Houston native also tallied six steals, fueling the Texas defense. Jordan Lee of Stockton, California, contributed 15 points, while post player Kyla Oldacre of Mason, Ohio, provided a strong interior presence with 12 points and two blocks.

Northwestern State, which entered the game having won four of its last five, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Texas’s swarming defense. The Demons were led by nine points apiece from guards Nya Valentine of Mobile, Alabama, and Clarence Djuela of Berlin, Germany. Starting forward Carla Celaya of Barcelona, Spain, was held to two points.

Texas shot efficiently from the field, though specific percentages were not immediately available, while Northwestern State’s shooting was hampered by the constant defensive disruption. The Longhorns dominated points in the paint and fast-break opportunities, a direct result of their 18 steals.

The victory was Texas’s 13th consecutive win by double digits this season and its third in a row by at least 47 points. The Longhorns have now won 22 straight regular-season nonconference games.

Northwestern State will look to rebound in Southland Conference play when it hosts Lamar on Sunday. Texas faces a stiffer test on the road Sunday against South Dakota State, one of its final challenges before beginning Southeastern Conference play in January. The Longhorns’ upcoming schedule includes a rematch of last season’s national championship game at South Carolina on Jan. 15.
