Ohio State Routs Niagara in Record-Setting Women’s Basketball Blowout
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming dominance, the Ohio State Buckeyes delivered a historic defensive performance Sunday afternoon, dismantling the visiting Niagara Purple Eagles in a non-conference women’s basketball game at Value City Arena.
The final score, a staggering 130-32 victory for the Buckeyes, underscored a contest defined by Ohio State’s relentless pressure and Niagara’s profound offensive struggles. The 98-point margin of victory stands as one of the most lopsided in recent NCAA Division I history.
From the opening tip, the Buckeyes’ defensive intensity set the tone. Ohio State forced a remarkable 42 Niagara turnovers, converting them into a torrent of easy transition baskets. The Purple Eagles’ offensive woes were stark, managing only 10 field goals on 63 attempts, a frigid 15.9 percent shooting performance from the floor. Their difficulties were compounded by 23 Ohio State steals and 11 blocked shots.
Niagara’s first points did not come until a free throw from Tyasia Freeman with 8:50 remaining in the first quarter, by which time Ohio State had already built a lead. The Purple Eagles finished the first half with just 12 points, a testament to the Buckeyes’ smothering defense that held them to single digits in both of the first two quarters.
The onslaught continued after halftime, with Ohio State erupting for 42 points in the third quarter alone, nearly surpassing Niagara’s total output for the entire game within those ten minutes. The Buckeyes’ offensive execution was as efficient as their defense was stifling, shooting 52 of 85 from the field for a 61.2 percent clip. They also dished out 23 assists on their 52 made baskets.
Ohio State’s attack was balanced and prolific, led by Dasha Biriuk, who poured in 25 points. Brynleigh Martin added 21 points, while Ava Watson orchestrated the offense with a double-double, scoring 15 points and distributing 10 assists. Jaloni Cambridge filled the stat sheet with 14 points, five rebounds and six assists, and Kennedy Cambridge contributed nine points, three assists and two blocks.
The Buckeyes’ depth was on full display, with Kylee Kitts impacting the game beyond her nine points, recording four assists and four blocks. Seini Henry controlled the glass with 10 rebounds.
For Niagara, now 0-7 on the season, the game was a relentless struggle. Freeman was a bright spot, battling for a team-high seven points and 11 rebounds. The Purple Eagles, who have yet to score more than 58 points in a game this season, shot just 2 of 17 from three-point range.
Ohio State improved its record to 6-1 with the victory, its sixth consecutive win after a season-opening loss to Connecticut. The Buckeyes’ offensive rating of 134.9 points per 100 possessions dwarfed Niagara’s mark of 33.8, illustrating the vast chasm between the two teams on this occasion.
A crowd of 5,239 at Value City Arena witnessed the record-setting performance. Ohio State now looks ahead to its Big Ten Conference opener on the road against Northwestern. Niagara will attempt to secure its first win of the season when it travels to face Buffalo.
