Iowa Holds Off Miami for Narrow Win in Women’s Basketball Clash
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed shots and critical late-game turnovers, the Iowa Hawkeyes escaped with a 64-61 victory over the Miami Hurricanes in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
The game, played before a crowd of 2,774, saw Iowa improve its season record to 6-0, while Miami fell to 4-1.
Neither team could find a consistent shooting rhythm, with both squads combining to shoot just 7 of 40 from three-point range. Iowa’s offense, while not efficient, was ultimately more productive, scoring 64 points on 71 possessions for an offensive rating of 90.5. Miami managed just 61 points on 73 possessions, an offensive rating of 84.1.
The contest was a tale of two halves, with Iowa building a lead in the second quarter that Miami spent the rest of the game trying to erase.
The first quarter was a tight, back-and-forth affair. Miami’s Amarachi Kimpson, a guard from Little Elm, Texas, and Iowa’s Hannah Stuelke, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, traded early baskets. The Hawkeyes held a narrow 14-13 lead after one period.
The second quarter proved decisive. Iowa erupted for 22 points, spearheaded by its interior presence. Ava Heiden, a 6-foot-4 freshman from Sherwood, Oregon, and Stuelke consistently found success near the basket, helping the Hawkeyes build a 36-28 halftime advantage. Iowa’s dominance in the paint was a key factor all game, as they outscored Miami 46-26 in that area.
Miami emerged from the locker room with renewed energy in the third quarter. The Hurricanes began chipping away at the deficit, outscoring Iowa 18-19 in the period to close the gap. Ra Shaya Kyle, Miami’s 6-foot-6 center from Marion, Indiana, was a force inside, while Vittoria Blasigh of Udine, Italy, provided a scoring punch from the perimeter. The Hurricanes’ defensive pressure also intensified, forcing several Iowa turnovers to fuel their comeback attempt.
Entering the fourth quarter trailing 55-51, Miami continued its push. A three-pointer from Kimpson and a pull-up jumper from Blasigh kept the pressure on the Hawkeyes. The Hurricanes’ defense tightened, holding Iowa to just nine points in the final period.
With under a minute to play and the game on the line, Miami had opportunities to tie or take the lead. However, costly turnovers in the final 30 seconds proved fatal. With Iowa clinging to a 61-60 lead, Miami committed a turnover with 11 seconds remaining. Iowa’s Kylie Feuerbach was fouled and calmly sank two free throws to extend the lead to 63-60.
Miami had one final chance, but a desperation three-point attempt from Kimpson as time expired missed its mark, sealing the three-point victory for Iowa.
Heiden led all scorers with 20 points for Iowa, showcasing a versatile inside game. Stuelke was a constant presence, adding 17 points and a game-high 37 minutes. Taylor McCabe of Fremont, Nebraska, contributed 11 points, including three three-pointers.
For Miami, Kimpson led the way with 19 points. Kyle was a dominant figure in the paint, finishing with 17 points. Blasigh provided a vital 11 points off the bench.
Iowa’s ability to control the glass was a significant advantage, as they out-rebounded Miami 11-4 on the offensive end, leading to crucial second-chance opportunities. Miami’s defense was active, recording 10 steals and forcing 15 Iowa turnovers, but their own 11 turnovers, particularly the late-game miscues, offset that defensive effort.
Iowa next hosts Western Illinois on Wednesday. Miami will travel to Parry Sound, Ontario, to face George Washington on Friday.
