Appalachian State at West Virginia
STAR CITY, W.Va. (Interstat) — A battle of Mountaineers is set for Thursday when the undefeated West Virginia women’s basketball team hosts Appalachian State at WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia (4-0) enters the contest fresh off a 57-49 defensive victory over Duke on Nov. 14. Sydney Shaw led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Celia Riviere added 12 points and eight boards. West Virginia has won each of its games by at least 22 points, aside from the Duke win.
Appalachian State (3-1) arrives with momentum after a 77-50 rout of Wofford on Sunday. Emma Smith posted a near triple-double in that game with 14 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. The team’s only loss this season came against Davidson, 74-55, on Nov. 12.
The game presents a clash of styles, pitting West Virginia’s stifling defense against an Appalachian State offense that has scored 65 or more points in three of its four contests.
This is the first game of a two-game road trip for Appalachian State, which travels to UNC Asheville on Saturday. West Virginia will head to The Bahamas for its next game, facing McNeese State in Nassau on Monday.
