Saint Mary`s at California
BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — Two surging women’s basketball teams will put their early-season momentum on the line Thursday when the undefeated Saint Mary’s Gaels visit the California Golden Bears at Haas Pavilion.
The Gaels (5-0) are off to their best start in recent years, coming off a 56-50 home victory over Nevada on Sunday. Edie Clarke led the way with 16 points and five rebounds. Saint Mary’s has built its record with a stifling defense, holding opponents to an average of 47.2 points per game.
California (4-1) has rebounded strongly from a season-opening 74-65 loss at Vanderbilt, reeling off four consecutive wins. The Golden Bears are averaging 72.0 points during their win streak, powered by a 76-65 victory over Harvard last time out. Lulu Twidale scored 17 points in that contest, while Sakima Walker added 15 points and three blocks.
The matchup pits Saint Mary’s defensive discipline against a potent California offense. The Gaels have yet to allow an opponent to score more than 56 points this season. The Golden Bears, meanwhile, have scored at least 69 points in every game since their opening loss.
Thursday’s contest is the first of a tough road stretch for Saint Mary’s, which travels to face Oregon and North Texas next week. California will head to Frisco, Texas, to face Grand Canyon and Auburn following this home game.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PST at Haas Pavilion.
