Golden Eagles Rally Past Lady Buccaneers to Remain Undefeated

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by offensive inefficiency, the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles used a dominant fourth-quarter performance to pull away from the East Tennessee State Lady Buccaneers for a 61-52 victory in women’s college basketball Thursday night at the Eblen Center.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 735, saw the Golden Eagles remain undefeated on the young season, improving to 4-0, while the Lady Buccaneers fell to 1-4.

For three quarters, the contest was a tightly contested affair. East Tennessee State managed to build a 25-23 halftime lead, capitalizing on a second quarter where Tennessee Tech managed just six points. The Lady Buccaneers extended their lead to five points late in the third quarter, but the final period belonged entirely to the home team.

Tennessee Tech exploded for 24 points in the fourth quarter, nearly matching their total from the first three quarters combined. The Golden Eagles’ offense, which had sputtered for much of the night, found its rhythm at the most critical juncture, outscoring East Tennessee State by 14 points in the final frame to secure the win.

The victory was not built on sharp shooting but on defensive pressure and capitalizing at the free-throw line. Both teams struggled mightily from the field. East Tennessee State shot just 31.5 percent, making 17 of 54 attempts, and were an icy 3 of 18 from three-point range. Tennessee Tech was only marginally better, shooting 38 percent on 19-of-50 shooting and connecting on just 2 of 12 from beyond the arc.

The disparity came at the charity stripe. Tennessee Tech attempted 25 free throws, making 21, while East Tennessee State went 15 for 20 from the line. The Golden Eagles also won the possession battle, scoring their 61 points on 68 possessions for an offensive rating of 89.9, compared to the Lady Buccaneers’ 52 points on 70 possessions for a rating of 74.8.

East Tennessee State’s defense was active throughout, forcing 13 Tennessee Tech turnovers and recording nine steals and three blocks. However, they were hampered by their own offensive struggles and were out-rebounded on the offensive glass, 7-4.

Anala Nelson led all scorers for East Tennessee State, finishing with 17 points. Teammate SaBreya Monsanto added 11 points and two assists. For Tennessee Tech, the scoring was more balanced. Cam Mathews led the Golden Eagles with 10 points, while Chloe Larry and Reagan Hurst each chipped in with crucial contributions. Hurst scored nine of her points in the first quarter to keep Tennessee Tech close early.

The game began as a back-and-forth affair, with Tennessee Tech holding a narrow 17-15 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter was a defensive standoff, with East Tennessee State outscoring the Golden Eagles 10-6 to take a two-point lead into halftime. The Lady Buccaneers maintained their slim advantage through the third quarter, leading 42-37 heading into the final ten minutes.

The fourth-quarter turnaround was swift and decisive. Tennessee Tech’s offense finally found cracks in the East Tennessee State defense, while their own defensive intensity forced the Lady Buccaneers into difficult shots and key turnovers down the stretch. The Golden Eagles steadily built their lead, sealing the game with clutch free-throw shooting in the final minutes.

The loss continues a challenging early-season stretch for East Tennessee State, which includes a defeat to a powerful Tennessee team. They will look to rebound quickly as they travel to face Memphis on Saturday. Tennessee Tech, riding the momentum of its perfect start, will face a tough road test at Southern California on Tuesday.
