Belmont Rallies Past Dayton in Women’s Basketball Showdown

DAYTON, Ohio (Interstat) — In a gritty, turnover-plagued affair defined by defense, the Belmont Bruins grinded out a 72-66 victory over the Dayton Flyers in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at University of Dayton Arena.

The game was a tale of two distinct styles. Belmont leveraged a swarming, opportunistic defense that forced a staggering 24 Dayton turnovers, converting them into critical transition opportunities. Conversely, Dayton struggled mightily with ball security, managing only four assists against those 24 giveaways, which stifled their offensive rhythm throughout the contest.

Belmont’s offense was spearheaded by the dynamic backcourt duo of Jailyn Banks and Hilary Fuller. Banks, a guard from Spring Hill, Tennessee, led all scorers with 21 points, adding three rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes of action. Her clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch helped seal the victory for the Bruins. Fuller, a forward from Brisbane, Australia, provided a massive first-half spark, scoring 14 of her total 14 points before the break. She also contributed three rebounds, two steals and two blocks, setting a defensive tone that Belmont would maintain.

Dayton was led by a dominant double-double performance from center Fatima Ibrahim of Winnipeg, Canada. The 6-foot-3 post player was a force inside, tallying 17 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Nayo Lear from South Holland, Illinois, added 15 points and three rebounds for the Flyers, while fellow guard Olivia Leung of Calgary, Canada, chipped in 14 points.

Despite the loss, Dayton was remarkably efficient from the free-throw line, converting 21 of 23 attempts. Belmont was nearly perfect from the stripe as well, making 9 of 11, but attempted far fewer. The Bruins compensated with superior ball movement, recording 10 assists to Dayton’s four, and by creating havoc defensively, notching 10 steals compared to the Flyers’ four.

From the opening tip, Belmont’s defensive pressure was evident. The Bruins raced to an early lead, capitalizing on a series of Dayton turnovers and missed shots. Hilary Fuller was instrumental in the first quarter, scoring eight quick points, including two layups off steals she created, and adding two blocks to help Belmont establish an early advantage they would not relinquish.

Dayton struggled to find any offensive consistency in the half-court. While they managed to keep the game within reach, largely through Ibrahim’s work in the paint and their proficiency at the foul line, they could never mount a sustained run to overtake the Bruins. Every time the Flyers threatened to close the gap, Belmont answered, often with a key basket from Banks or a defensive stop.

The Bruins’ supporting cast played a crucial role in the win. Emily La Chapell of Appleton, Wisconsin, scored 12 points, and Tuti Jones of Troy, Alabama, hauled in a team-high nine rebounds to go with eight points. Forward KK Brodie from Columbia, Missouri, provided valuable minutes off the bench with eight points and a block.

With the win, Belmont evens its season record at 2-2. The Bruins opened the season with a loss at Oklahoma before a decisive home victory over Brown. They then fell on the road to Tennessee before Sunday’s triumph. Dayton also moves to 2-2 on the young season. The Flyers had previously defeated Mercyhurst at home and Xavier on the road, with their other loss coming at Illinois State.

Belmont looks to build on the momentum Wednesday when it hosts in-city rival Lipscomb. Dayton returns to action Friday at home against Canisius.
