Montana at Washington
SEATTLE (Interstat) — The Washington Huskies used a dominant inside presence and a balanced scoring attack to overpower the Montana Lady Griz 87-56 in a nonconference women’s basketball game Monday night at a sparse Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
Playing before an announced crowd of 1,918, the Huskies improved to 2-0 on the young season while the Lady Griz fell to 1-2.
Washington seized control from the opening tip, establishing a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter and never looking back. The Huskies led 21-10 after one period and extended their advantage to 42-19 by halftime. Montana showed a spark after the break, outscoring Washington 19-18 in the fourth quarter, but the early deficit was far too large to overcome.
The game was defined by Washington’s overwhelming efficiency and interior dominance. The Huskies scored 50 points in the paint compared to just 8 for Montana. Washington also capitalized on mistakes, scoring 18 points off turnovers while Montana managed only 4.
Sayvia Sellers led all scorers with 19 points for Washington, adding five assists in just 18 minutes of play. Yulia Grabovskaia, a 6-foot-5 forward from Rostov-on-Don, Russia, was a force inside, contributing 14 points and eight rebounds in 16 minutes. Brynn McGaughy also reached double figures with 12 points and five rebounds.
The Huskies shared the ball effectively, with Hannah Stines dishing out four assists to go with six points and seven rebounds. Devin Coppinger filled the stat sheet with nine points and six rebounds, while Avery Howell pulled down eight rebounds.
Montana was led by Avery Waddington, who logged 34 minutes and finished with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Mack Konig added 11 points and Jocelyn Land chipped in 10 for the Lady Griz.
Statistically, the disparity was stark. Washington shot 46 percent from the floor on 34-of-74 shooting, while Montana struggled to a 29 percent clip, making just 18 of its 62 attempts. The Lady Griz relied heavily on the three-point shot, attempting 40 and making 13, but it was not enough to counter Washington’s efficient offense.
Washington’s next test is a road game at Utah on Saturday. Montana will look to get back on track when it faces South Dakota State in Rapid City, South Dakota, also on Saturday.
