North Alabama women pull away from Jacksonville State for home win
FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a matchup defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the North Alabama Lions remained undefeated, pulling away from the Jacksonville State Gamecocks for a 66-54 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Monday night at Flowers Hall.
The Lions improved to 3-0 on the young season, while the Gamecocks evened their record at 1-1 before an announced crowd of 1,170.
North Alabama’s victory was built on a foundation of relentless defense and superior ball movement. The Lions forced 18 Jacksonville State turnovers, converting them into 17 points, while committing only nine turnovers of their own. The assist column told a stark story of the offensive execution, with North Alabama dishing out 14 assists compared to just four for the visiting Gamecocks.
The game was a tale of contrasting halves for the Lions. They established control early, closing the first quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 19-15 lead. They extended that advantage to 35-27 by halftime, capitalizing on a series of Gamecock miscues. The third quarter proved decisive as North Alabama erupted for 20 points, outscoring Jacksonville State by 11 to build a commanding 55-36 lead heading into the final period.
Despite a late push that saw the Gamecocks outscore the Lions 18-11 in the fourth quarter, the deficit was too large to overcome. Jacksonville State’s offensive woes were pervasive. The team shot just 30 percent from the floor, making only 18 of 60 attempts, and struggled profoundly from beyond the arc, hitting 6 of 30 three-point attempts.
North Alabama’s offense, while not spectacular, was efficient enough, shooting 37 percent from the field. The Lions also won the battle in the paint, outscoring Jacksonville State 32-22.
The Lions showcased a balanced scoring attack. Cameron McNamara, a 6-foot-2 guard from Downingtown, Pennsylvania, led the way with 15 points and five rebounds. She was complemented by backcourt mates Alexsandra Alvarado of Richmond, California, who added 13 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Bukky Akinsola of Hillside, New Jersey, who filled the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high five assists. Akinsola was also a disruptive force defensively, part of a Lions squad that tallied 14 total steals.
Sofia Ceppellotti of Udine, Italy, provided a valuable eight points off the bench.
For Jacksonville State, the offensive burden fell heavily on Makala Hobdy. The Troy, Alabama, native was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult night for her team, scoring 16 points and grabbing eight rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Adriana Jones of Newbern, Alabama, was the only other Gamecock to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points.
The Gamecocks will look to rebound quickly as they return home to face Southern Mississippi on Thursday. North Alabama, meanwhile, faces a significant step up in competition, hitting the road for a Friday matchup against a powerful Oklahoma squad.
