Miami (Ohio) at Oakland
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Interstat) — In a back-and-forth women’s NCAA Division I basketball game on Monday, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies held off a late surge from the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks to secure an 80-75 victory at the Athletics Center O’rena.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Oakland building a commanding early lead before Miami mounted a furious second-half comeback that ultimately fell short. The win improved both teams’ overall records to 2-1 on the young season.
Oakland established control from the opening tip, outscoring Miami 22-13 in the first quarter and extending their lead to 41-25 by halftime. The Golden Grizzlies’ offense was efficient, and their defense forced the Redhawks into a cold shooting start.
The momentum shifted dramatically after halftime. The Redhawks exploded for 23 points in the third quarter, cutting deeply into the Oakland advantage. They continued their offensive onslaught in the final period, pouring in 27 points, but the Golden Grizzlies managed to score just enough to keep Miami at bay, netting 16 points in the fourth to seal the five-point win.
The outcome defied the statistical projections from Interstat’s ELO system, which had heavily favored Miami with an 83.80 percent probability to win.
Oakland’s victory was anchored by a dominant performance from Layla Gold. The 5-foot-11 guard from Indianapolis scored 21 points and secured 13 rebounds for a double-double, while also contributing four assists. She was instrumental in maintaining Oakland’s offensive flow under pressure.
Supporting Gold was Angie Smith of Bolingbrook, Ill., who added 16 points. In the frontcourt, Lianna Baxter, a 6-foot-2 forward from Marinette, Wis., just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, and she protected the rim with three blocked shots.
For Miami, the comeback attempt was led by the dynamic guard play of Tamar Singer. The 5-foot-4 native of Haifa, Israel, logged 37 minutes and led the Redhawks with 18 points and five assists. Her backcourt partner, Amber Scalia of Stillwater, Minn., contributed 13 points.
Despite the loss, Miami showcased its depth. Brooke Blumenfeld of Northbrook, Ill., provided a spark off the bench with 14 points, while forward Amber Tretter of Ferdinand, Ind., hauled in nine rebounds to go with nine points.
A key factor in the game was Oakland’s proficiency from beyond the arc. The Golden Grizzlies connected on nine three-pointers, while Miami struggled from deep, making only four of their 18 attempts. Oakland also won the battle on the offensive glass, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to Miami’s four, which led to crucial second-chance opportunities.
Both teams were efficient from the free-throw line, with Miami hitting 15 of 16 attempts and Oakland making 11 of 14. The Redhawks’ defense was active, forcing 19 Oakland turnovers and converting them into 17 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit.
The announced attendance was 418.
Miami will look to rebound on the road this Thursday against Indiana-Southeast. Oakland’s next contest is at home against Harvard this Saturday as part of a multi-team event in Berkeley, Calif.
