NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle decided in the final seconds, the Chattanooga Lady Mocs edged the Lipscomb Bisons 59-56 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Allen Arena.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 757, was a tale of contrasting halves and pivotal runs, with Chattanooga building an early lead, surrendering it, and then mounting a final-quarter push to secure the victory. The Lady Mocs improved their early season record to 2-1, while Lipscomb fell to 1-2.

Chattanooga established control from the opening tip, using a stifling defensive effort to hold the Bisons to just nine points in the first quarter. The Lady Mocs capitalized on their size and strength, consistently working the ball inside. They ended the period with a 16-9 lead, a margin built largely on their dominance in the paint, where they would ultimately outscore Lipscomb 34-20.

The second quarter saw a dramatic shift in momentum. The Lady Mocs’ offense stalled, managing only nine points as Lipscomb began to find cracks in their defense. The Bisons, led by the playmaking of Hannah Richardson, outscored Chattanooga 17-9 in the period, knotting the game at 25-25 as the teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime.

The third quarter evolved into a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading baskets. Lipscomb continued its strong play from the second quarter, scoring 18 points, while Chattanooga matched that output with 16 of their own. The period ended with the Bisons holding a narrow 43-41 advantage, setting the stage for a tense final ten minutes.

The fourth quarter was defined by critical individual performances and a final, decisive push from the visiting Lady Mocs. Trailing by two, Chattanooga’s offense reignited, scoring 18 points in the final frame. The inside-outside combination of Gianna Corbitt and Kalifa Ford proved particularly effective down the stretch. Both players finished with a team-high 15 points, with Corbitt adding seven rebounds and Ford grabbing four.

For Lipscomb, the story of the game was the stellar play of Molly Heard. The 6-foot sophomore from Pisgah, Alabama, was a force on both ends of the court, registering a game-high 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots in 39 minutes of action. Her presence in the paint was a primary reason the game remained close throughout.

Despite Heard’s efforts, Chattanooga’s interior defense and rebounding ultimately made the difference. The Bisons were hampered by cold shooting at critical moments in the fourth quarter, scoring only 12 points as the Lady Mocs methodically reclaimed the lead.

Lipscomb had opportunities in the final minute to tie or take the lead, but Chattanooga’s defense held firm, forcing difficult shots and securing key rebounds to seal the three-point victory. Izzy McPherson provided valuable support for Chattanooga with 10 points, while Sarah Owona contributed five rebounds and a block off the bench.

For the Bisons, the loss overshadowed strong rebounding performances from Taylor Bowen, who pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, and McKayla Miller, who just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds to go with three blocks. Addison Melton added nine points for Lipscomb.

The result was a mild upset according to advanced metrics, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected Lipscomb with a 54.60 percent probability to win on their home floor.

The game was part of a challenging early-season schedule for both teams. Chattanooga entered the contest coming off a 52-94 road loss to a powerful Florida team last Thursday, preceded by a dominant 82-34 season-opening win over King. Lipscomb was riding high after a 105-46 rout of Sewanee on Thursday, which had followed a 46-80 loss at Indiana to open the season.

Looking ahead, Chattanooga will aim to build on this road victory when they travel to face Troy on Wednesday. They will then return home for a two-game homestand against UAB on Sunday and Austin Peay on Nov. 20.

Lipscomb, meanwhile, will look to regroup before hosting Johnson University on Thursday. They then embark on a two-game road trip, facing Mississippi Valley State on Sunday and local rival Belmont on Nov. 19.

The narrow victory for the Lady Mocs provides a significant momentum boost as they continue their non-conference slate, demonstrating an ability to win a close game on the road against a determined opponent. For the Bisons, the game serves as a lesson in closing out tight contests, with the team showing resilience in erasing an early deficit but ultimately falling just short.
