South Carolina Upstate at High Point
HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging High Point team looks to continue its dominant season when it hosts South Carolina Upstate in a Big South Conference women’s basketball matchup Saturday at Qubein Arena.
The Panthers (24-4 overall) enter as one of the conference’s top teams, having won 10 of their last 11 games. Their most recent outing was a commanding 83-53 road victory at Gardner-Webb on Feb. 21, where Nevaeh Zavala scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds. High Point’s only stumble in that stretch was a 72-57 loss at Radford on Feb. 7.
Conversely, the Spartans (10-19) have struggled for consistency, though they are coming off a narrow 51-52 home loss to Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. In that game, guard Cassie Gallagher led South Carolina Upstate with 17 points, four assists and three blocks. Gallagher has been a bright spot, averaging 18.6 points over her last seven contests, including a 25-point performance in a win at Presbyterian on Feb. 4.
The teams met earlier this season on Jan. 3, with High Point securing a 72-58 road win in Spartanburg. The Panthers have controlled the recent series, and the Spartans will need a standout performance from Gallagher and improved defensive intensity to challenge the conference powerhouse on its home floor.
High Point’s balanced attack, featuring Zavala and guard Aaliyah Collins — who had a 15-point, 11-assist double-double against Gardner-Webb — presents a formidable challenge. South Carolina Upstate has shown resilience in close games, with three of its last six contests decided by five points or fewer, including a double-overtime win over Longwood on Feb. 21.
Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The game will be a final regular-season test for both squads before the upcoming Big South tournament.
