Utah Valley Women Pull Away Late to Sweep Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — A dominant fourth-quarter surge, powered by the scoring tandem of Kaylee Headrick and Cambree Blackham, propelled the Utah Valley Wolverines to a 65-51 victory over the Tarleton State Texans in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Wisdom Gym.

The win, witnessed by an announced crowd of 701, improved Utah Valley to 13-12 overall this season, while Tarleton State fell to 12-15.

The game’s decisive stretch came in the final period. After a sluggish third quarter saw their lead dwindle, the Wolverines erupted for 23 points in the fourth, outscoring the Texans by 10 to pull away decisively. The offensive explosion was a stark contrast to the first three quarters, which were defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles for both sides.

Headrick, a 5-foot-10 guard from Bluffdale, Utah, was instrumental throughout, finishing with a game-high 19 points. She was particularly effective in the final frame, hitting a crucial 3-pointer and a driving layup during the game-sealing run. Blackham, a 5-7 guard from Lehi, Utah, matched Headrick’s 19-point output, providing consistent perimeter scoring and clutch free throws down the stretch.

The most important part of the game was Utah Valley’s defensive response to a Tarleton State rally in the third quarter. The Texans, led by Jakoriah Long’s 12 points and the interior presence of 6-foot-6 Elodie Lutbert, who tallied three blocks, had cut into the Utah Valley lead. The Wolverines’ offense stalled, managing only 11 points in the quarter, allowing Tarleton to close the gap and threaten to take momentum into the final period.

However, Utah Valley’s defense tightened to start the fourth, generating turnovers and contested shots that ignited their transition game. This defensive stand provided the platform for the offensive outburst from Headrick and Blackham, turning a narrow contest into a comfortable double-digit road victory.

The game began with Utah Valley establishing an early edge, leading 15-13 after a first quarter that featured multiple turnovers by both teams. The Wolverines extended their advantage to 31-22 by halftime, thanks in part to a 16-point second quarter. Tarleton State’s best period was the third, where they outscored Utah Valley 16-11 to set the stage for the dramatic final act.

For the Wolverines, Halle Nelson added eight points and Gracie Sorenson contributed nine points. Amanda Barcello, a guard from Chandler, Arizona, chipped in six points, all from the free-throw line in the game’s final minute to help secure the win.

For the Texans, Long’s 12 points led the way. Caroline Lyles added nine points and Lutbert finished with six points, three assists and three blocks. Allie Myers provided a spark off the bench with six points in just 12 minutes of action.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Utah Valley over Tarleton State, having also won the previous meeting on Jan. 29 in Orem, Utah, by a 70-67 score. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Tarleton State had entered the game with a 61.2 percent probability to win.

Both teams return to WAC play on Saturday. Utah Valley travels to face Abilene Christian, while Tarleton State remains at home to host California Baptist.
