Wagner Edges New Haven in Tight Women’s Basketball Contest
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by its frantic final minute, Keana Foz scored 20 points and the Wagner women’s basketball team survived a late rally to edge New Haven 64-62 in a Northeast Conference matchup Thursday night at Charger Gymnasium.
The visiting Seahawks, who led for nearly the entire contest, saw a 10-point fourth-quarter lead evaporate in the final three minutes before securing the victory at the free-throw line. The win improved Wagner to 13-14 overall, while New Haven fell to 7-20.
Wagner appeared to have the game in hand, leading 59-49 with under three minutes to play after a pair of free throws from Irene Fernandez de Caleya. The Chargers, however, mounted a furious comeback. Jasmine Mckay, who led New Haven with 17 points, hit a 3-pointer with 2:55 remaining. After a Wagner turnover, Lindsay Hogan connected from beyond the arc to cut the deficit to 59-55 with 22 seconds left.
The Seahawks’ Klea Kaci made one of two free throws to push the lead to five, but Mckay answered with another 3-pointer, making it 60-58 with 10 seconds on the clock. Following a timeout, Wagner’s Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor was fouled and made both free throws to restore a four-point edge. Mckay was not done, drilling her third triple in 90 seconds to bring New Haven within one at 62-61 with just four seconds remaining.
The Chargers immediately fouled Wagner’s Priscila Varela, who missed both free throws. On the second miss, Modesayor secured a critical offensive rebound and was fouled. She made the first free throw to give Wagner a 63-61 lead but missed the second. New Haven’s Addisen Sulikowski grabbed the rebound and called timeout with 2.1 seconds left.
On the ensuing inbounds play, Mckay drove the length of the court but her contested floating jumper at the buzzer missed, and Wagner’s Fernandez de Caleya secured the defensive rebound as time expired, sealing the narrow victory.
The game’s pivotal sequence was set up by Wagner’s dominance in the third quarter. After a tightly contested first half that saw New Haven lead 32-28 at the break, the Seahawks outscored the Chargers 20-11 in the third period. Foz, a guard from Mississauga, Canada, was instrumental in the surge, scoring seven points in the quarter as Wagner built a 48-43 lead heading into the final frame.
Foz played 40 minutes, adding three assists to her game-high point total. Kaci, also from Mississauga, provided crucial support with 12 points, including two 3-pointers. Modesayor, a 6-foot-3 forward from Nigeria, added 11 points and nine rebounds, her presence inside altering numerous New Haven shots.
For the Chargers, Mckay’s late explosion nearly stole the game. Aniya McDonald-Perry was a force throughout, finishing with 14 points, three assists and four blocked shots in 39 minutes. Her defensive work in the paint was a constant challenge for Wagner’s drivers.
The game began with New Haven establishing an early edge, leading 16-12 after the first quarter behind eight points from Mckay. The Chargers maintained that four-point advantage at halftime, but Wagner’s defensive intensity increased after the break, forcing several turnovers that fueled their transition game and led to the decisive third-quarter run.
The contest was a rematch of a Jan. 17 game on Staten Island, which Wagner also won, 50-45. The Seahawks have now won two straight and four of their last six. New Haven has lost three consecutive games.
