Duke Routs Florida State in ACC Women’s Basketball Matchup
DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — Toby Fournier scored 22 points and blocked five shots, and the Duke women’s basketball team used a dominant second half to pull away from Florida State for an 80-52 victory in Atlantic Coast Conference play Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The game, played before a crowd of 3,020, was never in serious doubt for the Blue Devils, who improved to 21-7 overall and solidified their standing in the upper tier of the conference. Florida State, struggling through a difficult season, fell to 9-20.
The most important stretch of the contest came in the third quarter, when Duke transformed a modest 33-29 halftime lead into a commanding 55-44 advantage heading into the final period. After a competitive first half that saw Florida State’s Jasmine Shavers keep her team close with 13 early points, the Blue Devils opened the third quarter with a decisive 12-4 run. The surge was fueled by Fournier’s interior presence and the playmaking of guard Taina Mair, who finished with 11 points and eight assists.
Duke’s defense, anchored by Fournier and 6-foot-3 forward Delaney Thomas, who added 13 points and two blocks, stifled the Seminoles throughout the second half. Florida State managed just 11 points in the third quarter and shot erratically all night, unable to find consistent offense outside of Shavers, who led all scorers with 21 points.
The Blue Devils’ offensive balance proved overwhelming. Alongside Fournier and Thomas, Riley Nelson contributed 13 points and six assists, while Ashlon Jackson chipped in 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Duke shot 47% from the field and assisted on 22 of its 30 made baskets, showcasing a fluid offensive system that Florida State could not disrupt.
Solè Williams was the only other Seminole to reach double figures, scoring 12 points, but Florida State’s offense was plagued by 21 turnovers, which Duke converted into 28 points. The Seminoles also struggled to score inside against Duke’s length, with Fournier and Thomas altering numerous attempts at the rim.
The victory was a return to form for Duke following a narrow 53-51 road loss to Clemson on Sunday. The Blue Devils, who were installed as 29.5-point pregame favorites according to Interstat’s ELO system, methodically extended their lead throughout the second half, eventually outscoring Florida State 47-23 over the final 20 minutes.
For Florida State, the loss extends a challenging season that has seen the Seminoles drop 10 of their last 12 games. The team’s previous outing was a 77-61 home loss to Stanford. Despite the efforts of Shavers, a guard from Mesquite, Texas, Florida State could not sustain its early momentum, scoring only nine points in the second quarter to allow Duke to seize control before halftime.
The game’s total of 132 points fell under the pregame over/under line of 146.5, largely due to Florida State’s scoring struggles.
Duke will look to carry its momentum into a high-profile rivalry game, traveling to face North Carolina on Sunday. Florida State will continue its road trip, visiting Wake Forest on Sunday as it seeks to snap a three-game losing streak.
