Matadors Edge Highlanders in Defensive Big West Battle
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle where offensive efficiency was scarce, the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team leaned on a decisive third-quarter surge and clutch late free throws to secure a 58-53 victory over UC Riverside on Saturday night at a sparsely attended UCR Rec Center.
The Matadors, who entered as significant underdogs according to advanced metrics, improved to 8-14 overall and in Big West Conference play. The Highlanders fell to 7-16.
The game’s pivotal sequence arrived late in the third quarter. Trailing 44-39 after a Hannah Wickstrom 3-pointer, Cal State Northridge closed the period on a 7-0 run. The burst was capped by a Rita Nazario 3-pointer with just five seconds remaining, giving the Matadors a 46-44 lead heading into the final frame. That momentum shift proved permanent, as UC Riverside never regained the lead.
The fourth quarter was a tense, low-scoring affair defined by missed opportunities and key defensive stops. UC Riverside managed just nine points in the period, shooting 3 of 15 from the floor. The Highlanders tied the game at 51 on a Seneca Hackley 3-pointer with 5:32 remaining, but would only muster two more points the rest of the way, both on Wickstrom free throws.
Cal State Northridge’s final points came from the foul line in the chaotic final seconds. With six seconds left and leading 56-53, Nazario was fouled and made both free throws to seal the outcome. The Matadors survived despite shooting just 36 percent from the field and 50 percent from the free-throw line. Their defense compensated, holding UC Riverside to 30 percent shooting overall and forcing 13 turnovers, which they converted into 16 points.
A major factor in the Matadors’ win was their dominance inside, outscoring the Highlanders 30-16 in the paint and outrebounding them 11-9 on the offensive glass.
Wickstrom, a guard from Melbourne, Australia, led all scorers with 23 points for UC Riverside. Hackley, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, added 15 points and four assists. For Cal State Northridge, Nazario, a guard from Figueira da Foz, Portugal, provided a critical offensive spark with 16 points off the bench, including three 3-pointers. Forward Jite Gbemuotor of Delta State, Nigeria, recorded a double-double with 13 points and three blocks, while center Saray White of Sacramento contributed 11 points, two blocks and several key defensive rebounds.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. UC Riverside took a 27-25 lead into halftime after a Hackley free throw, but the Matadors’ third-quarter response set the stage for the narrow road victory.
Cal State Northridge next travels to face Hawaii on Feb. 14. UC Riverside visits UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 12.
