Late Rally Falls Short as Texans Edge Thunderbirds

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by grit over grace, the Tarleton State Texans edged the Southern Utah Thunderbirds 59-57 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at Wisdom Gym. The contest, witnessed by 747 fans, was a rematch of a Jan. 15 meeting that saw the Texans roll to an 81-55 victory, making this two-point affair a testament to a vastly improved defensive effort from the visiting Thunderbirds.

The game’s pivotal sequence unfolded in the final 10 seconds, a chaotic climax to a contest where neither team led by more than seven points. With the score tied at 57 and 18 seconds remaining, Southern Utah’s Devyn Kiernan was called for a foul on Tarleton State’s Jakoriah Long. Long, a 5-foot-7 guard from Waco, Texas, who tormented the Thunderbirds all afternoon, calmly sank both free throws to put the Texans ahead 59-57.

Southern Utah, out of timeouts, rushed the ball upcourt. Sierra Chambers drove into the lane but her contested layup attempt with two seconds left missed its mark. Tarleton State’s Caroline Lyles secured the defensive rebound as time expired, sealing the narrow victory for the home team.

The final moments capped a game characterized by offensive frustration. Both teams combined to shoot just 33% from the field. Southern Utah finished at 20 of 59, while Tarleton State managed 23 of 65. Three-point shooting was nearly absent, with the teams making only six combined long-range shots. The difference came down to a slight edge in efficiency and critical plays in the paint, where Tarleton State outscored Southern Utah 38-28, and points off turnovers, where the Texans held a 14-10 advantage.

Southern Utah opened the game with clear purpose, racing to a 22-10 lead after the first quarter behind early scoring from Sierra Chambers and Kortney Doman. The Thunderbirds’ defense was disruptive, and they seemed poised to avenge their earlier loss decisively.

The second quarter, however, belonged entirely to Tarleton State and specifically to Jakoriah Long. The Texans switched to a more aggressive defensive scheme, generating 11 steals in the game, and Long took over offensively. She scored 10 of her game-high 24 points in the period, leading a 18-10 quarter that cut Southern Utah’s halftime lead to just 32-28. Long’s relentless drives to the basket provided the offensive anchor the Texans desperately needed.

The third quarter saw Tarleton State complete its comeback, outscoring Southern Utah 16-8 to take a 44-40 lead heading into the final frame. The Thunderbirds’ offense grew stagnant, managing only eight points in the period. Tarleton State’s interior duo of Allie Myers and Caroline Lyles began to control the glass, with Myers pulling down 13 rebounds and Lyles securing 11 to go with her 11 points.

Southern Utah refused to fade in the fourth. Trailing 48-42 with under eight minutes to play, the Thunderbirds mounted a charge. A three-pointer from Devyn Kiernan, who led Southern Utah with 16 points, and a driving layup from Ava Uhrich fueled a 10-2 run that gave the visitors a 52-50 lead with 5:27 remaining.

The teams then traded blows in a tense, possession-by-possession battle over the next five minutes. Brooklyn Fely’s layup off a Kiernan assist tied the game at 57 with just over a minute to play, setting the stage for the dramatic final sequence and Long’s decisive free throws.

Beyond Long’s scoring outburst, Tarleton State received crucial contributions from its frontcourt. Caroline Lyles posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Allie Myers was a defensive force with 13 rebounds, two assists and a block. For Southern Utah, Sierra Chambers added 14 points and four rebounds, and Ava Uhrich filled the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.

With the win, Tarleton State improves to 12-11 on the season, while Southern Utah falls to 15-8. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Cedar City, Utah, on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
