New Haven at Chicago State
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in the final stretch of the season will meet Saturday when the New Haven Chargers visit the Chicago State Cougars in a non-conference women’s basketball game.
The matchup, organized by the Northeast, tips off at 2 p.m. CST at Jones Convocation Center. Both teams enter with identical 7-15 overall records, though Chicago State sits at 7-17.
The Chargers will look to snap a two-game skid, most recently a 65-46 home loss to Long Island on Thursday. The Cougars, conversely, are riding a three-game winning streak after defeating Central Connecticut 75-69 the same day.
A key rematch awaits. Just over three weeks ago, on Jan. 15, New Haven secured a 63-56 victory over Chicago State in Connecticut. Player performances from that game will likely set the tone for the return fixture.
New Haven is anchored by forward Aniya McDonald-Perry, who posted 10 points in the January win over Chicago State. She is coming off a 38-minute, eight-rebound, three-block effort against Long Island and has been a consistent force, including a 25-point outing against Mercyhurst on Jan. 29.
Chicago State will counter with guard Keona McGee, who was held to 12 points in the first meeting. McGee has been on a tear during her team’s win streak, erupting for 28 points against Central Connecticut and averaging 18.7 points over the last three contests.
For New Haven, consistency has been elusive. Since the January win over Chicago State, they are 3-4, with three losses by six points or fewer, including an overtime defeat. The Cougars have found a rhythm in their last three, averaging over 71 points per game after a 1-4 start to January.
The game represents a critical opportunity for both programs to climb toward the .500 mark before entering the final month of regular season play. The Chargers will aim to re-establish their defensive presence from the first matchup, while the Cougars will rely on McGee’s hot hand and home court advantage to exact revenge.
